Redundancy and CVs - how to include the time out of work?

HurricaneHalle · 07/11/2018 16:40

It completely slipped my mind that I need to include the few months that I was out of work due to Redundancy and restructure on my CV.

I was made redundant in the April and secured another position starting in late September of the same year.

Is there a professionally acceptable way of detailing it on a CV? My thoughts were putting the dates and then "actively seeking work due to Redundancy". Surely not mentioning it and letting the prospective employer spot it is not ideal....

Thanks for any and all advice.

In the absence of anything else, that’s what I’d do. Gaps are suspicious- for the most part they just want to know you weren’t in prison!
If you were actively seeking work, we’re you claiming JSA or whatever the current equivalent is? So if they ask for bank statements they will see the payments going in?
Were you doing anything else during that time you can add in? Studying, voluntary work, or anything like that?

Sabbatical or career break?

topcat2014 · 07/11/2018 21:00

@Atowelandapotato - why would you show anyone your bank statements?

I wouldn't mention benefits - again no-one's concern but yours.

I would include redundancy as a reason for leaving - perfectly legitimate and not a reflection on the candidate - is is the job rather than the person after all.

With just a couple of months, I wouldn't worry - although you could just include a statement of seeking work.

I like the idea of taking time after a redundancy to pursue a personal project. I'm in a creative field though, so that's a reasonably normal thing to see on a timeline CV.

@topcat2014 sometimes companies ask for copies of bank statements if you have a gap in your employment history so you can evidence what you have been doing, ie in receipt of JSA.

I haven’t ever been asked for bank statements and would refuse if I was.

I’d put “sabbatical” for two months and then “job search” for the rest. If they raise it, say you wanted to take the time to find the right job rather than just jump at the first one available. Any decent HR person will accept that without question.

I have been out of work since June due to redundancy- during this time I have embarked on a professional training course as well as working for my DPs business
I haven't put any of this on my CV

EssentialHummus · 08/11/2018 09:58

If it’s not recent (in the past two/three years) I’d not include it at all. More recently and I’d put something like “Travel” or “Job search following redundancy”.

If it was a few years ago just list the years and leave out the months, i.e. Job A (2010-2013), Job B (2013-present)
