Handing in notice and colleagues being informed after you have left?

Has anyone ever heard of a colleague working out their notice, leaving and then an email informing everyone the person had left being sent out?
This has just happened at my DS work and I've never heard of this before.....

In my previous job it happened a lot, we didn't get an email to say they'd gone though. It's not so unusual.

Yes of course. Have had it verbally, in writing. My last place had an announcement board online of new starts and leavers too, that flashed up next to the contact list.

OliviaStabler · 02/11/2018 06:32

Yes, I've seen this happen. One guy I worked with didn't want anyone to know he was leaving so we were informed the Monday after his last day on the Friday.

I tried to do this but was sabotaged. I had to leave for a personal reasons but didn't want to and was finding it very tough. One of my managers took it upon herself to tell everyone against my express wishes Hmm I can't tell you how much harder that made things for me. I had to smile, have a leaving do, openly chat about the painful reason I was leaving Sad

MissDai5y · 02/11/2018 06:33

The only time we've had that happen at work it's always come out there was no notice worked, they had to leave immediately...

That's not to say it's not possible, you don't have to tell people your leaving but that's very unusual that it wouldn't come out in any way.

Maybe the person leaving didn't want to make a fuss. In my last job I just left, I only really had a select few I would consider to be truly friends. They knew the second I was going to a new job. But I didn't make a big song or dance about it and didn't tell lots of people. So to some I probably did just never come back!

Where I work I've also seen a lot of people 'leave' because of inappropriate behaviour, so they will literally go into a meeting with managers first thing in the morning and then never come back. It happens, quite a lot unfortunately!

giantbanger · 02/11/2018 06:36

I sort of did this. I handed in my months notice and told colleagues on the Monday of my last week that I was finishing on the Friday.

I didn’t want a fuss.

TipseyTorvey · 02/11/2018 06:46

In my place people regularly just 'disappear' . HR taken them into a room and make them an offer they can't refuse and the first anyone knows about it is when you get a rejection from their email. Unsettling at first, now I'm used to it so doing a big song and dance over someone leaving would seem ott to me now.

Isleepinahedgefund · 02/11/2018 06:46

This happened at my work recently, no hint of them leaving and then an email round. This person did know they were leaving, but they resigned rather than be sacked.

Alfie190 · 02/11/2018 08:50

Yes, nearly always. Why do you find it odd?

Satsumaeater · 02/11/2018 11:40

I think if people choose to leave it's a bit odd (but understand the pp who said they had a painful reason for leaving, I am thinking of people who leave for a new job). But on the other hand I didn't want a leaving do for my last job and tried to engineer it so I avoided it.

If you are "let go" whether by sacking, redundancy or settlement, it's more likely that an email will just go round to say you are no longer working there.

Not that unusual. Some people just want to go quietly.

LIZS · 02/11/2018 12:24

My redundancy was not officially announced until after I left.
