Advice and guidance on working from home

Hello All!

Does anyone here work from home?

I have certain anxieties and challenges with mental health that have made me realise how I would be more suited to working from home/working alone.
Anxieties and phobias aside I am intelligent, energetic, enthusiastic and capable. I am a very creative individual and can motivate myself well.
I really just need to be pointed in a certain direction and off Id go...

The direction right now is what is new to me. Having made realisations through years of working in jobs that ultimately did not do my health and well being any good, it is time i find what makes me happy and comfortable so I can see what I can really do.

Any ideas, advice or guidance welcome on where to start looking, who to contact, and trusted companies when it comes to working from home, would be grately appreciated.

THANKYOU!

What is your profession?

ScreamingValenta · 01/11/2018 18:03

What type of work are you seeking and what experience do you have?

TeaLeafaeLaeT · 01/11/2018 18:43

Hi y’a
I have experience and qualifications in customer service, advice and guidance. My recent experience has been in the homeless sector providing advice guidance and support work, so I am good at signposting people and solving problems....all were in high stress environments which ultimately i could not cope with.
However in the right circumstances and environment, I think I could apply myself.

My hobbies and passions are in video and audio production. I have been referred to as a ‘visual artist’ ... I have a creative resourceful mind and think my talents are best directed into this area if possible.

If I can combine any of these skills into working from home, and anyone has had experience I. Working from home or self employment, I’d love to hear from you. Looking for ideas.

I can't advise on the creative side, but home-based telephone customer service roles exist and might be something you could look for in your job search.

If you're involved in video/audio production as a hobby, do you have any contacts who could advise you on making this professional?

TeaLeafaeLaeT · 01/11/2018 21:27

Thanks screamingvalenta... yes you are right, there are customer service roles about, I’ll need to find out more about them, and the types of companies that do this, you never know whom may read this and have experience in this area.
I have connections else where on the creative industry, mostly in other countries....So far no concrete advice or suggestions or leads to employment but who knows what will happen.... I think once I find the right contacts it will definitely help, So I thought I’d send out a few posts to a few places to see who reads them. The journey continues!

Have you searched the jobs advertised on this site? There's an emphasis on 'family friendly' jobs which might include home-working.

The other option is to get a foot in the door with a job that could potentially be done from home and see if this is something the employer would support once you are in role.

It sounds like a home-working 'day job' might be what you need while you work on launching your creative skills as a longer-term option.

How would you be with site visits? One of my previous employers had roles called "product adoption specialists" and they trained people on how to use their product and then they went to clients and trained them. The job was effectively home-based, they went into the office occasionally for training and meetings, and visited clients to deliver the training or, more and more, used programs like Webex to do the training virtually.

I also did training courses myself using webex, I was at home, the trainer was at home and the other participants were either at home or in the office. Another possible option if you don't mind talking to people?

Thank SV, not overly familiar with this site so will indeed check out the family friendly work section :) appreciate the advice

Satsumeater thanks, it is something to consider, and I do have a training background. Im not really keen on group training though, 1-1 scenarios i can cope with but for me spending my days visiting various places and doing group training was always something that would keep me up all night worrying. Appreciate the advice, very helpful...it’s quote overwhelming to know where to start.

Are you currently employed and is there anything preventing you doing some or all of your job from home? Even part of the time, and would that be enough for you?

My organisation never advertises jobs that can be done from home but I currently have 2 colleagues who are working from home. One was off sick for a while, and is now technically back at work but unable to drive, so is working from home. The other is doing 1-2 days a week at home as a means of managing their family situation. both are presumably temporary, but it's often easier to negotiate this from inside a company than outside.

Thanks for the advice, will take that on board.
