Payroll issue, someone please advise!

Morning everyone! My sister has Just turned 17 and started her apprenticeship working for a well known law firm (doing administration). She started this position on the 15th of this month and her contract states 'payment will fall on the last working day of the month'.

She was under the impression that she'd be paid this month as she's been working for them since the 15th.

When I started my job I worked there for 3 days as I started on the 27th and still got paid on the 30th.

Her contract doesn't say anything about working a month in hand or anything.

Is anyone able to advise? Thanks.

Sorry, the problem is that she hasn't received any form of payment - didn't make that clear!

She probably missed payroll cutoff - the payroll that i manage pays on the 28th and cuts off around the 10th of the month. Hasnt she asked her employer?

Kate123cl · 31/10/2018 09:30

@melissasummerfield I see what you mean. I thought they would've made a one off payment or something. She starts in half an hour so will talk to them when she's in.

Probably missed payroll cutoff. If it’s part of a large company that will be set centrally. Every time you pay someone it costs money so they want to do all staff at the same time on the same day.

TheWiseWomansFear · 31/10/2018 09:31

She'll get 6 weeks together at the end of next month. It's what happened in my apprenticeship when I started on (oddly also the 15th).
They're correct and she will be paid a larger amount next month and then will be paid as normal.

I thought they would've made a one off payment or something.

I very much doubt it tbh.

Kate123cl · 31/10/2018 09:33

Ah that seems really crappy!

Thanks guys. Does make sense x

She may also be taxed at a higher bracket because she's been paid more (depends on her wage).

melissasummerfield · 31/10/2018 09:33

I realised after i posted that its the last day of the month and she probably hasnt had chance to ask yet, sorry!

If she will struggle she might be able to ask for a hardship payment of what she is owed, but it depends on her employers policies. They really should of explained it to her when she was inducted!

Kate123cl · 31/10/2018 09:44

@melissasummerfield That's ok! I think she's best to do that too, obviously first job so no savings as such. There's the cost of commute/ lunches/ work uniform etc so think they should at least consider it! Also agree that it should've definitely been discussed at induction!

Oh, what a pain if you are waiting for your first pay packet though - so disappointing!

I do think the others are right, the larger the firm the earlier the cut off is for payroll unfortunately. Hope she gets a bumper pay packet at the end of November instead!

Usually on monthly salary it would be paid pro-rata in my experience.

swingofthings · 02/11/2018 05:55

I started on the 17th and when I asked I was told I would be paid on 30th. They didnt. I chased, they apologised, it was of course a communication issue, HR thinking they'd done what they required to inform Payroll, payroll saying they hadn't. They then did an emergency payment wich was a bit lower than what I expected but the difference was paid at the end of the month.

She needs to contact HR or payroll to understand why she wasn't paid and if they do an interim payment.

Kate123cl · 02/11/2018 07:57

Thanks ladies. She spoke with HR and they explained that she missed the payroll cutoff (Friday 12th and she started on Monday 15th)! She asked for a sub payment and they just flat out refused Sad at least she'll have some extra next month x

I have worked in finance for large corporations for many years and it would be very unusual to provide interim payments, far too much unnecessary admin. It would be against policy and not debatable.

Lazy office workers not wanting to do anything that’s not spelt out in their contract.

It’s a poor show to expect someone to work for 6 weeks before getting paid.
