I'm a childminder and I'm about to start employing 2 assistants. They both understand that the job is casual and that if the extra children they are needed for leave then I can't carry on employing them.
They are both (for different reasons) not interested in a 'proper' job.
I have been told that I will need to pay them holiday pay (even though they are working term time only?) potentially maternity pay? Sick pay?
I starting to think I can't afford this.....Does anyone know what the actual situation is?

Once you employ someone on a continuous basis for 1 month or more they do become entitled to things ike sick pay, maternity pay etc. Statutory holiday pay is 4 weeks per year but you could build this into their weekly pay. You also have to give them access to a pension, this could mean either contributing to one or paying for them to see a financial advisor to set up their own.

I think that you need to seek proper advice. The inland revenue do a booklet for small employers. There may be a way to get around it so that they are classed as self employes but the rules concerning this are quite strict.

Gosh I thought there might be more to it .....

I'm employing one for 3 hrs a week and the other for 4.5.

This seems like a very complicated not to mention expensive business

Ring your local tax office & ask for the Business Support Team. They will advise you on exactly what is involved- and it's free.

If you visit the Department of Trade & Industry website \link{http://www.dti.gov.uk/here}.
This tells you employee's rights as to holidays, customary holidays, sick pay etc. I have always found it very useful & I used to be a personnel manager before lo's came along.

Great News
A lady came out from the tax office to do all the training with me and I've just logged on to the on-line system and I can do it all on computer.
So all that worry for nothing
