tax implications of "staff discount"?

I'm a freelance writer. One of the clients I do a lot of work for is a large household goods manufacturer. Large items like sofas and so on. They contacted me about doing some more work recently and I mentioned that we were looking at buying a new sofa soon, and that i'd probably get it from them.

Client said along the lines of "great, let us know when you've chosen and we'll sort you out with a staff discount". Even though I'm not staff.

Are there any tax implications in this?

I wouldn't have thought there would be any but you maybe call HMRC and check. When I was an employee we got discounts and no tax implications, only time was tax implications was things like company paying for private health insurance.

The company would not be giving you a staff discount - because you are not staff. Rather they would be offering you a discount equivalent to the amount they offer to staff. They can offer discounts to whoever they like!

M&S give a staff discount of 20%. They also regularly offer customers a discount of 20% on either targeted product ranges or for particular periods of time.
