new job - wwyd?

I have been offered a new job. I currently work in a business support area for a big company (don’t want to be too specific) and the reasons for leaving are that another different business support area has been outsourced and I don’t feel I have had a lot of support (the job is too much for 1 person but they have relied on temps in stead of employing another permanent person).

The new job would be doing pretty much the same as I do at the moment, but has less work in 1 area. It is paying 10% more than my current job.

My current boss has now offered me a new position. The job would be a progression of my current role doing more work in the area that I would not be working in at the new job, but I would need training. Although I think this would make me more employable in the future, I am concerned that any move will be strung out for months while they fill my position and that a payrise might not be forthcoming (we have had static pay or below inflation rises since I have worked here). I am also concerned that I am too set in my ways to retrain.

Basically:

Old company – like the people, could progress career to new area, known to be v flexible with working hours

New company – better Ts&Cs, bigger department, definite payrise, have offered v good flex working hours

If I turn down new job, it is unlikely that I will such a good offer again. But if I stay then I get the opportunity to train up into a new area.

WWYD?

How long have you been with your current company? If you take this new role will there be further opportunities to progress?

Is the new company larger? Did they mention progression at the interview?

Are you fired up and excited about either of these opportunities?

It sounds to me as though the new opportunity is the way to go. You probably won’t ever be offered flexi or another pay rise or promotion at your current company. You can hit the ground running in your new company which will probably impress them and may lead to promotion.

I have been with my current company for 10 years. My flexible working arrangement is fantastic.

New company is about the same size. Only progress would be perhaps team leader if the company grows.

Not particularly excited about either opportunity tbh. I don't love my job, but it pays pretty well. I really like some of the people I work with, but if they left I would not want to work here.

I can see why your struggling to make a decision. Is it worth speaking to your current employer asking them about a time frame and a pay rise. Have they offered you the new role in the knowledge that you have been offered a new job?

BluebellCockleshell123 · 09/10/2018 13:38

Yes - current employer offered new role after I told them I had been offered a new job.

I am indecisive at the best of time, but this is killing me :(

Will speak to my boss re: time frame and pay rise tomorrow. Got until Thursday to confirm with new job.

Thanks for commenting. Even just writing the dilema down is helping.

Urgh - tough one!
Do you think the new job your boss is offering is likely to be exactly as suggested? Or do you think it will basically be your current job (that is already too much for one person) with extra added on? Because if it's the latter, then I'd go for the new company!

Sunflowersforever · 09/10/2018 13:59

Firstly, congratulations on the new job and also for the current employer better offer too. Clearly you have a lot to offer, and both employers recognise this. Go you!

So, with that in mind, sounds like there is no real bad decision as you'll progress either way.

Id therefore look at it another way. Do you need to shake your life up a bit? Are you stuck in a rut? Would having to make an effort with new colleagues, new route to work, and so on benefit you as a person? If so, push ahead with the change. If not, and you don't need the shake then stay where you are.

There is no bad decision here, maybe just one that pleases you more.

BluebellCockleshell123 · 09/10/2018 16:08

Yes I guess both decisions would be good for my career.

The easiest thing would be to move to the new company. I've got all the knowledge & experience I need to do a good job there. And I've been coasting for quite a while so it might give me the shake up that I need. But the role would probably be a bit more dull.

If I stay in my current company I think I would end up doing my current job for the next 3 months while training up replacement and junior team members. Once they are up to speed I can go on training courses and move to new role.

I would feel guilty about leaving my current company. We are right in the middle of a new implementation and I am a key member of the team. I did help complete a huge project in August, but we have similar deadlines going all the way through until next summer & it just feels like groundhog day at the moment.

Promises promises. Tell your current boss that unless you get your job offer on paper inclding pay and time frame you are moving on.

ShalomJackie · 09/10/2018 19:51

New job.

If current company had valued you before they knew of your offer they would have offered new role already.

DailyMailDontStealMyThread · 09/10/2018 21:51

New job, current one sounds like hot air.

Go in with the confidence that they need you more than you need them at the moment BUT don’t pass up the opportunity of the new job if you think your current employer will go back on their word once the Thursday deadline passes.

If you choose the new job then your current employer will manage without you and will have to get a replacement or maybe two pronto.

Thanks for all the advice. I finally (been mulling this over for a week!) made the decision to accept the new job.

I feel happy so it must have been the right thing to do Smile
