Long notice period?

A few months ago I took a job on a FTC, and have just been offered the role on a permanent basis. My notice period throughout the FTC was one month, but I’ve just had the new permanent contract through in the post and it says that the notice period will now be 3 months. I’m a data analyst and the role is not senior. I’ve never had a notice period more than a month before, and noticed that when I was last looking for a job recruiters would ask “is your notice period 4 or 8 weeks?” which makes me think 3 months is unusually long? The company is very large and I assume this is a standard contract with no room for negotiation, so I probably am going to sign it. But does anyone have experience with long notice periods (particularly for not that senior roles), will it put new employers off when I do move jobs?

3 months is fairly standard. 6 months for more senor roles and sometimes as high as 12 months.

Notice periods vary from 1 to 6 months generally speaking. The duration is more about the person's skill set than their seniority, as the notice period is there to give time for replacement of the person's skills. The more difficult they are to replace the linger their notice period.

As you're on 3 month's notice your data analysis skills are highly sought after, which is a positive thing,
.
If you are looking to move, you could shorten your notice period by process of negotiation and giving your employer a good handover plan including a knowledge transfer document for a future incumbent, so they have less reason to cling on to you. Also you could propose a leave date and also state you'd like to take your remaining annual leave to shorten your notice.

Oops sorry the longer that should say.

And just to add rarity of skill set does of course link to the person's seniority in a way, as a CEO will have rare skills not found in a significant majority of the population, well that's the theory...

Completely normal, I've been on 3 months' notice for years, in several organisations. Where I work now, everyone except admin are on 3 months.

Our mid level employees are on a standard 3 month notice. It’s not unusual and works both ways to protect employer and employee. I wouldn’t worry about hiring someone on a three month notice period either.

My current notice period is 3 months for a fairly senior position but I've also had it in previous jobs for non senior positions but it was just standard for those organisations.

I have worried about it putting new employers off but have never found that and with my two previous I negotiated the notice period down to 6 and 8 weeks.
