Student Nurse - went home sick

Im a 2nd year student nurse in my 2nd week of placement. This nightshift I have vomited five times, felt dizzy and weak. I have just gone home. I get the impression from my mentor and other staff that they dont believe me/ I did the wrong thing.

Surely I am within my rights to go home sick. I apologised and intend to be back as soon as possible but i suspect its bacterial tonsilitis.

I have not missed placement time before and am not short on hours yet.

I get the impression my mentor dislikes me, she is very sharp and blunt when speaking, and nitpicks a lot. She is one of 2 main mentors and I have a third associate mentors.

This placement is split into two parts with the pass/fail being at the end of the two. but would this be a grounds to fail me?

I will of course make the hours up, I feel dreadful both physically and emotionally. I will go to GP in morning, if it is tonsilitis I will ring in sick for tomorrow night in good time. I hope to be fine for friday night.

Thanks xx

Of course you were right to gone home OP. You can't be in a ward of sick people if you are vomiting! You will need to stay off for 48 hours after it resolves too. They can't fail you for being sick. Ignore the bint and get well soon. Xx

Student nursing can be hell. You did the right thing - get well soon. They cannot fail you for being unwell. If they try, give me a PM and I’ll talk you through a comeback x big hugs

You were absolutely right to go home, please stay off sick until you are recovered and cleared by your doctor. If you try and work through illness you end up being far more ill!

You need to let your link lecturer know, but of course you can’t be expected to work if you are sick. Also, when I trained students were not obliged to do nightshifts. Some of us chose to, to mirror our mentors shifts, but it wasn’t mandatory. AND, you are supernumerary so it shouldn’t make any difference to them one way or the other. You will have to make the hours up though.

So they can’t fail you for this. Always tricky when you don’t gel with a mentor. The nitpicking could just be her teaching style - not a great teaching style, but everyone has something to teach us. If you feel that she isn’t being fair with you, you should talk to you link lecturer, sooner rather than later.

Thankyou all, I have emailed my link lecturer. I really tried and the staff were mostly really nice.

I have worked nights before and actually dont mind them. I also need to do them to meet the time worked with mentors.

I am struggling with the mentor, I really want to learn. They havent filled any paperwork in, im intending to try and work with the other mentor to make up the hours. Im on nights with them next week.

This placement ends in an interim review anyway, which i dont think we fail as such.

You've all cheered me up with your kindness 💓
