When do you get paid?

I have just started a new job. My contract states the day we are paid as 'on or around the last working day of the month or the 1st of the next month' which isn't very clear really is it?

The other employees I work with advised me to tell our boss if I need to be paid by the 1st because sometimes she is late paying it. Since I'm new I don't know what is usual and this is a small business! So as not to drip feed, I'm autistic and don't always know the correct way to handle things.

I do need to be paid by the 1st because my rent is due on the 1st so I asked her (politely) if I could be paid by the end of tomorrow please as I have to pay my rent. She rather crossly replied that I really don't need to remind her to pay me.

So was I unreasonable to ask? Of course I know that she wouldn't just not pay us but I can't afford to be late with my rent because otherwise I will have a record of paying my rent late. I would have thought that if it's Sunday and you haven't been paid and tomorrow is the 1st that most employers would understand you might be wondering as you have bills coming out tomorrow.

Isn't there another identical thread on this?

Electrascoffee · 30/09/2018 12:42

Yes but I didn't get many replies so I thought I would ask im work

Just speak to your boss and explain. Could you also agree to pay rent on the 2nd of the month?

Electrascoffee · 30/09/2018 13:15

I did explain to her that I need to pay rent on the 1st and her reply was something like there is no need to remind me to pay your wages.

Thing is my rental contract says 1st of every month which is standard for rented houses. And I've been here for 4 years paying on the 1st.

Mine is currently "on or around the 25th of the month". It's not that unusual.

Change your rent day to the 7th; give yourself some leeway. You can't request to be paid early; it'll go through payroll.

Electrascoffee · 30/09/2018 13:43

We don't have payroll - she pays us herself by bank transfer. There are only 4 of us.

How can I suddenly expect my landlord to accept rent payments that are a week late?

Boss had says we're never paid later than the 1st. Which is fine. But since I'm new I didn't know this.

My firm (I work in payroll) pay on 23rd if each month. Contracts stating onor around are a safety net because we pay by online banking which mostly goes through the same day but if the online banking is playing up (either end) payments might not show up until the next day.

AlexanderHamilton · 30/09/2018 13:46

We advise everyone to have their direct debits go out a few days after pay day - especially on weekends or bank holidays

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 30/09/2018 13:48

So she's telling you that she never pays later than the 1st, but your colleagues are telling you that sometimes she forgets and the pay is late?

I think you do need to clarify with her what the process is, and just explain what your colleagues have said. Also, bank transfers are usually instant (or within 2 hours) but sometimes take a few days. As your contract says on around the last working day or ON the 1st of the next month, then she needs to be doing it on the last working day to be sure it arrives in your account by the 1st.

BlackLambAndGreyFalcon · 30/09/2018 13:50

Ours is on 24th of each month. If the 24th is a weekend or a bank holiday then we get it on the nearest working day before the 24th.

Fiffyshadesofgreymatter · 30/09/2018 13:50

And also, you tell your landlord that your old job paid you by the 25th (or whatever) but your new job pays you on or shortly after the 1st, so is there anyway you could be allowed to move your rent payment day. You've been there 4 years so they know you're a good tenant. You are allowed to ask. If they say no, then they say no but you can ask.

DeadCertain · 30/09/2018 14:00

As a private landlord I have had no issue in the past changing a reliable tenant's rent payment date for a very similar reason to yours. If you have been there for many years and proved yourself to be a trustworthy tenant then your landlord may well have no problem in allowing you to change your payment date. Just ask and see what they say.

Electrascoffee · 30/09/2018 14:23

Ok. I am sure he would understand actually. I'm more concerned about why she would be defensive I guess.
