Babysitting? Cleaning? Ironing? Is the mum working?

Of course there is! Lots of single mums work, in fact all the single mums I know do some work, they need to to pay the bills...

Need to know more to advise on what kind of work though, how old are your DC and what is your childcare situation (any family help? does their dad contribute financially or with childcare help)? What work did you do before DC, what qualifications/skills/experience have you got?

In general the single mums I know who don't have a lot of family help and whose DCs' Dads aren't involved on a daily basis do work that is relatively flexible around the DCs school hours and school holidays in particular, so for instance one does freelance nannying/babysitting and some housekeeper and cleaning work where she can pick up and drop hours around the DC as needed (pretty poor pay though and an irregular income which isn't ideal).

As another example, a member of my team (in HR) is a single mum and we are lucky in that we can work from home fairly often (not whilst looking after DC though) and we have generous family leave, emergency leave and annual leave provisions which she uses to cover holidays and any childcare failures or child's sick days. I am also happy as her boss to let her drop everything and leave at short notice if a child is sick or whatever, and also for her to occasionally leave early and make up her hours later on if it's parents evening or school play or whatever. She had to work hard (as did we all) to get into a professional role with that flexibility, it entailed studying for her professional qualifications part-time in the evenings and working in lower paid roles for a few years as well...

Good luck!
