pay-rises for nannies

Our nanny earns £195 net a week for 3 10 and a half hour days. Has been with us for 7-ish months. Brings her own daughter to work. She's great and we want to acnowledge that (and keep her - obviously!) so would like to give her a pay-rise. What does anyone think would be reasonable? (we're in sw london).

Our nanny started 2 years ago on 3 days at 70 a day, I then moved that on the first anniversary to 74 a day which was a 6% pay increase. We will probably discuss it again this Sept, but as ds is now at school 3 mornings a week, I am loathe to give her a massive increase. How about moving from 65 a day to 69, which is about 6%. I must say, I would probably only do it on the anniversary of her arriving as you may be setting a precedent of semi annual payrises.

I quite often give ad hoc bonuses for things that have made me v. happy. My ds got into a good school recently and I know the reason he performed so well at his interview (yuk thought at 3) was her diligence in taking him to good play groups etc. So I gave her a bonus, which she really appreciated and it was tax free for me to give as well.

We also give the odd day off paid if we find one of us is around and this acts as a bonus.

So, I would tell her you'll give her a payrise after one year and then surprise her with a bonus fo managing the holidays so well, finding that new play group etc etc, then it doesn't set a precedent. I think nannies like to know where they are going to be in terms of pay rises.

Good ideas beachyhead. But I think if I were going to increase her pay I would go from 65 per day to 70, not 69. It may be 6%, but not rounding it up by one more pound just seems a bit stingy, don't you think?

I know what you mean, but I was going to go to 75 from 70 last time, but I wanted to do it by % otherwise the increments get smaller each time you give them 5 more (if you see what I mean). Also, you'd probably express it as a weekly figure (or should so it as a gross figure, if you are really sensible!!!)

I'm big on not setting precedents!!!!

Hi Hatter. Generally nannies are on £80 net for a ten hour day so sounds like you have a good deal, although she is very lucky to be able to bring her own DD with her. Alot of employers would not even entertain the idea so I hope she realises that.

Keeping my head low on this, as we are not so generous with our Nanny, since she has her own child with her. We do an inflationary increase each year, which matches our own pay increase. But she does get lots of extra holiday and short days because of our work patterns.

No, I think you are right that if they bring their own child, its like a nanny share, so I wouldn't expect to pay more than 55 or 60 a day....in London, that is!!! So hatter, she's doing all right!!!
