New job & annual leave

I started a new job at the beginning of the school holidays. It has been a whole new challenge as I've been self-employed for 8 years whilst bringing up my 3 children. I've had to spend a lot of money on childcare this summer and now with after school clubs during the term time.
I have gone to book annual leave for next year, thinking I would be able to get some of the 6 weeks holiday off so we could have our first ever family holiday abroad (they have waited for 10 years) and save some money from childcare - NOOO! Every school holiday is already booked and there doesn't seem to be anything I can do! Am I being completely unreasonable in thinking this really isn't going to work for my family?! I have now heard that people are setting alarms for midnight so that they can book a year in advance to the day. I have trained for this role and really want it to work but can't see how at the moment. Sad

You are not being unreasonable. It’s a damm nuisance I know, especially with three school age children, but this is the reality with non term time jobs. As you have started in August, all the leave has now been taken. Could you take any unpaid or parental leave? Swap shift/work patterns with a colleague who doesn’t have children?
It would be a shame to give up on the job now, particularly as you have trained hard for it. Things will improve and you will get a share of the leave. Just not next year it seems?

Hope you can sort something soon.
