Have got some mysterious spots that were misdiagnosed as Shingles by NHS Direct have been to the doctor and she says that they are not shingles but are a virus and I may be contagious.

I have been very ill for a few days, today I feel ok just a bit washed out and itchy but new spots are still coming.

I will not go to work tomorrow as I am working with babies and it would be wrong to take the risk.

But on Friday I am teaching and on this week I have my year nines who I have already missed this week and if I don;t see them on Friday it will be two weeks before I see them again and we are doing an important project that needs me to be there and I have stuff to do related to my promotion and I hate being off work.

Should I go in if I feel OK or should I stay off for the time I have been signed off for. The doctor said I may be contagious but she wasn't sure and if I feel OK surely whatever I had must have passed.

Hey, I've just had chickenpox! Glad I didn't have shingles though Get better soon!

I think you are only contagious for two days AFTER the rash appears aren't you???

nickytwotimes · 06/06/2007 15:02

if you are signed off, stay off. you are obliged to do this if your doc issues you with a note. trust me, your project is less important than infecting the kids!

It's a tough one, because you're going to feel really bad if your class all go down with it. If you do go in, can you keep your distance from them?

nickytwotimes · 06/06/2007 15:03

btw, when i say obliged i mean officially rather than morally!

I don;t have chickenpox or shingles but some mystery virus that has left me covered in spots that are burning me with a banging head, nausea and exhaustion.

My main problem is that the doctor didn't seem to know what was wrong so how we will she know whether I am contagious and for how long.

I can't really keep my distance as the my clasroom is so small and it is my largets clas of the week, we are packed in like sardines.

I'd be upset if my child's teacher was booked off with a mysterious viral infection that could be infectious and she decides to attend school and my child becomes infected.

Maybe you should try and make arrangements for your project with another teacher and take up with working on your promotion when you're better.

twinsetandpearls · 06/06/2007 15:43

point taken space puppy, there is not another teacher who can teach what I am teaching as I work in a small department. I just feel guilty that I am sat here when I shoudl be at work and that school is having to fork out a daft amount of money for supply when we are strapped for cash.

I gathered you were more frustrated than anything else. could you not make a video and send it in and do your lesson that way? Also if your school has internet access you can use skype you could be on the "phone" to them during a lesson and they can follow your instructions.

SpacePuppy · 06/06/2007 15:47

doing a remote lesson could be a new skill to them to learn!

lizziemun · 06/06/2007 15:50

I think that you have to go back to the doctors to get signed back to work, as the workplace insurance may not cover you as you should not be there as you have been signed off.

twinsetandpearls · 06/06/2007 15:52

It is a brand new arts project that has never been done before and they do need me in the room, I will just have to start later and try to condense it. Am prpearing some prep work they can do with a cover teacher.

You are right space puppy it is frustration as I don't know what is wrong and I just want the doctor to say to me you have... you will feel .... and you will be better by ..... I am a control freak and all of this is beyond my control.

The work for my promotion invloves going into schools which cannot be delayed and soeone else will have to do it which is not the end of the day but a lot of my new role is about being visible and making myself known and I am going to miss out on doing that sat here.

lizzie is right. We don't allow signed off staff to work unless GP declares them fit.

twinsetandpearls · 06/06/2007 15:53

I didn't realise that we have staff coming back early quite often, probalby why we have such a high sickness rate!
