How long until contract is issued after accepting job

I was offered a job (verbally) 2 weeks ago and I haven’t yet received my contract and my boss hasn’t yet received a request for a reference. How long should I wait until I ask the hiring manager about time scales. Just for reference it’s a Council job

I have been in jobs where I did not receive the written contract until after I had started.

I don't think you need to wait any more to ask the hiring manager about timescales. I would ask IIWY.

You should get a provisional offer letter (provisional because the offer can be withdrawn if references are unsatisfactory) but legally they don't need to provide a contract until 8 weeks AFTER your start date. I work for a council and they literally waited until the last possible day (so I got it 8 weeks after I started).

Thanks I would be happy with a conditional offer. I just don’t want to hand my notice in before I have anything in writing. I think I’ll email and see what they say - hope they haven’t changed their minds!

I believe the law requires that one is issued before six weeks after you start but I work for an LA and they routinely take much longer than that.

You should get an offer letter setting out all the terms though.

The law states within two months of starting work.
