Do I have to cover shifts not in my contract?

Recently got a new job and a week after being there they asked me to cover a different location to help someone who was sick. I said yes expecting it to be a one off but 2 weeks later I've ended up doing it every day! I told them I don't want to go back after my last shift but they've asked me to cover again today. I'm going to say no as I'm not comfortable and today they want me to go alone when I was splitting it with someone else last time... which was bad enough.

Do I have the right to without getting in trouble? It's not the site I'm contracted to work at.

Does your contract explicitly state the site you are contracted to or does it have a travel clause??

It says "Site/contract: name of building/site"

There's nothing about travelling elsewhere or anything about the other site I'd been covering at

In that case then yes, strictly contractually speaking you are within your rights to only work at the site specified in your contract. HOWEVER as you have only been employed in this role a short time you have very little employment protection and they could simply choose to dismiss you, and you would have very little legal comeback (unless there were grounds for thinking there was discrimination on the grounds of a protected characteristic like race, pregnancy etc). Until you have been with the employer 2 years you cannot claim 'simple' unfair dismissal. It sucks but there it is.

So unless you are prepared to take the risk, you might be better off at least in the first instance politely explaining to your manager (or whoever is asking you to cover this site) the issue you have with it (whether that's the travel or the nature of the work at that site or whatever) and making sure they know that nothing was mentioned about having to work there in your recruitment/contract - hopefully they will have some sympathy and can make some arrangements to at least make it acceptable to you or minimise the need for you to go there... if you can think of a compromise e.g. you don't mind doing it if the shifts are split or if it's only a day a week that would probably help.

Thank you :), I'll explain I'd rather not go back and if they try to force me then honestly I'd rather just leave. It makes me absolutely dread going in.
