Does resignation “in writing” include email?

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

I need to give notice to my employer, and in my contract it says I need to give it “in writing”. Does that mean a written/typed, printed and signed letter, or is an email sufficient? Or should I email with a written letter as well?

Thanks!

Email is fine!

Also, do I address it to my line manager, or to the headmaster? (I work in a School, was interviewed by my line manager but had a letter of job offer from the head)

Headteacher

NotSuchASmugMarriedNow1 · 18/08/2018 15:18

I world email a letter of resignation over, as an attachment

I resigned by email (also in a school) and it was accepted. I addressed mine to my headteacher as well if that helps.

I don’t have the head’s email address. What if I email my line manager, followed up with a written letter to the head?

Ah I didn’t think of that, thank you

Hang on, you are a teacher and don't have the head's email.

MongerTruffle · 18/08/2018 15:24

Could you email the headteacher's PA?

Loopytiles · 18/08/2018 15:26

Line manager is fine.

I work in a School but as support staff. I’m not a teacher.

She said she worked in a school pest, that doesn't necessarily mean she's a teacher. I shouldn't imagine she'd be desperate to resign now if she was a teacher anyway as leaving would not be possible, possibly until Christmas.
You'll find the head's email address on the school website OP- if not there'll likely be a PA email that you could use.

I've resigned by email before.

I work in HR and we would accept resignations by letter, email or at a push, text.

Just something that's a permanent record, so that the individual cannot change their mind and deny it.

Personally I would resign by letter attachment to an email, that way I have a copy and also know when it was sent/received.

ghosting · 23/08/2018 12:28

Thanks, that what I did. But as it’s the holidays, nobody has confirmed receipt? Can I still calculate my last day from when I actually sent the letter, even if it wasn’t read by them until later?

I would say so Ghosting, I would certainly advise that notice began from when the email was sent if I was dealing with a situation like that in my role.

I'd also send a letter recorded delivery so you can get a record of when it was signed for, that would be pretty incontrovertible.
