Returning to work after mat leave

I am returning to work after a year off .

I have requested and been accepted for three day a week . I have 56 days accrued holiday which I play to rake as 4th day till it runs out so I am paid for four days rather than three for a year .

My husband seems to think my contract to say I am working four days a week as I am taking the fourth day holiday but I have tried to explain to him that it doesn't work like that as I am techniciaally working three but using accrued holiday for the fourth.

Anyone have any links to websites where shows this so I explain it to him better as he keeps getting very frustrated not understanding it and I am getting annoying having to explain it over and over again

@LilacIris it's a big organisation

Two companies I have worked for who are global and large have allowed this. I thought it was pretty common

It was common at the FTSE 20 company I worked for also. I worked a 4-day week but was paid for full time for a year after returning following my 2nd DC (no contractual changes then obviously & went back to working 5 days when my accrued holidays ran out).

You need your contract to say 4 days and that you are using vacation time for the 4th day, and when that runs out you will officially be 3 days. That way you can continue to accrue seniority, pension and vacation during that 4th day. But are you ok with using all your vacation this way and not having any weeks off (Christmas/summer??). Also, what are you going to do if your baby gets sick during one of your 3 days? You may want to save 5-10 days so you have a buffer.

I'm with your DH (and everyone else too). You should be contracted for 0.8wte until whatever date you drop a day.

I'm doing similar - I'm officially full time at the moment but using accrued leave to have Mondays off. That leave runs out in October at which point I'll drop to 0.8wte (and I'm nhs for anyone adamant that no companies allow this).

Presumably OP is using only her accrued holiday to take the 4th day off as annual
leave for the next year. When she returns to work she'll get her new holiday entitlement so will still be able to take days off. But I agree, you want your contract to state you're doing 4 days until a certain date as it will affect your pension etc.

And make sure you get your annual leave agreement in writing. Some companies put in their contracts that they can cancel agreed annual leave with a certain amount of notice if there is a good business need to.

Justcontemplating all employers can cancel annual leave if there is a good reason and the notice given by the employer to cancel needs to only be as long as the leave

Yea sorry op I'm the same on rare occasions that my dp is right! It's like ripping a plaster off, do it quick Grin
