Shift working and Bradford Score

Hi. I have a question about the Bradford system and am hoping someone will know the answer.

As an example, If you work 2 shifts a week and you have a week off (so ill at home for 7 days), should your days sick be 2 (for the shifts you missed) or 7 (total number of ill days in and out of work) on the calculator?

My employer are counting it as 7. Seems a little harsh to me. I've had two episodes of sickness, if I have even one more day I trigger at 100. Counts as 20 days but I only missed 6 shifts.

It should be 2, the same as someone with one bout of sickness which spans a weekend: one bout of sickness, only work days counted.

It was 6 shifts over 2 episodes, but they are counting my score as 80.

The Bradford calculation is relatively simple which means it isn't very adaptive for part time staff.

Number of occasion x number of occasions x days.

They will be using 7 days because it is a week.

I think they should be using 5 days which is a standard working week and will be the equivalent of your 2 day working week. You have had 6 days which is 3 weeks so equivalent to 15 days of a full time colleague

That would give a score of 2x2x15 = 60

If they calculated with 2 day weeks then it would be unfair to your colleagues.

Full timer who has 3 weeks sickness over 2 occasions gets a score of 60
You have 3 weeks over 2 occasions and get a score of 24

If they trigger based on score you would be able to have nearly 3 times as much sick leave before triggering.

It is simply the numbe4 of days between your first and last day of sickness, regardless of whether they are rest days or shift days.

So If you are still sick on your rest days but able to return for your next shift just say your last day of sickness was your last working day. If your sickness spans 2 different sets of shifts you will jabe to count the days in between also.

Yes that makes sense, especially with the part time/full time scenario. I hadn't thought of that.

The maximum full time shift (without overtime) is 4 per week because they are 12h night shifts. They do it from your telephone calls not from dates you say when you return.

Maybe I just need to lie in future Blush I expect I've been too honest.

They said to me it is supposed to pick up people who have odd days off here and there as opposed to genuine illness. If I'd had 8 sickness incidences of 1 shift my score would only be 80 so I can't see how that makes any sense.

I had shingles for 2 weeks the first time so wasn't allowed back for 2 weeks as per occupational health) and second a nasty viral infection caught from my toddler.

If I have even one more shift off sick this year it goes to 189! One hell of a jump from 80. I do my best to avoid illness but I've got two kids under 4 who pick up everything going. It just doesn't seem particularly fair but maybe it's just me being sensitive Wink

To clarify my last post and the calculation of 80 my employer calculates it the other way around so

Days x episodes x episodes
8x1x1 = 80

The correct calculation would be 64!

So yes, I'm being sensitive.

The calculations are the same both ways round and the number of days obviously wouldn't be 1! It would be 8. That makes far more sense and actually makes me see it's much fairer. I just need to learn to minimise the days noted if I have any more sickness.

Yes absolutely . We work 6 days on and 4 days off. If I had the last 2 days of the set off sick I most certainly would be reporting as being well again on rest day number 1 even if I wasn't! The only time that dishonesty can not work is if you are sick spanning 2 sets of shifts.

I work 2 shifts per week. If I have those 2 days off sick it is classed as 2 days off sick not a full week. I have to call in to close sickness on the second day though even if I am still ill if that makes sense!

Yes that makes sense.

I called the day of my shift both times. I had no choice with the first absence as I wasn't allowed back. The second time I didn't call to confirm my return until I was better which was a mistake on my part probably.
