Setting hours and bank hols

Wonder if your bright people can advise me.
I have a new job and for the first six month I'm in a rota 2 days a week inc weekends, bank hols and normal week days.

All fine as I'm new and I know this when I took the job

When this 6 month contract is up I'm going to approach my management about setting my 2 days as standard every week. As it's very difficult to juggle the child care the way it is. My husband travels and I can't get set days with a child minder as the hours are too all over the place. We are just about coping

Others in the work place DO have set hours though not everyone.

My question is if I get told I can I'm deciding between asking for Monday / Thursday
Or Tuesday/ Thursday

I think I'd prefer the 2 days off in between in the Monday Thursday option but will I miss out on all the bank holidays or would I accrue extra holiday to compensate?

There is no Statutory right to not work on a bank holiday, they are just a normal working day. Your contract is what gives you any rights with regard to bank holidays (such as pay, time in lieu).
So assuming you got Statutory holiday, then as a part time worker doing 2 days per week in the UK you would get 11.2 days of paid annual leave. You would book those days off as per the holiday booking procedure of your employer (your employer may dictate some specific days you have to take).

So yes, when you worked on a bank holiday you would simply not be using up annual leave so you would have that day to take off at another point.

Normally the total hours for bank holidays in the year are added to your holiday allowance and then pro-rated if you are not full time. If you work a bank holiday, nothing is deducted so you effectively get that time added to your holiday allowance. If you have the bank holiday off, the total hours are deducted - so you might (e.g.) get 3 hrs pro-rated for the bank holiday, but have to use 7 hours of your combined holiday allowance.

... sorry, just realised the above might not be very clear - if the bank hol is not part of your working pattern, nothing would be deducted from your hols for not working it, so you'd get the pro-rated time back.

Would you be working the bank holidays? If so I don't think it makes any difference to your holidays, you'll get the hours pro-ratad and added to your leave entitlement.

Yes I'd have to work every bank holiday that falls on a Monday if I choose the Monday and Thursday as my work days.

In your opinion would you then go for the other Tuesday Thursday pattern or soulful do get extra holiday I'm so confused.

If you would have to work BH, would your partner be off to look after your DC? You'll be hard struck to find a childminder who works BH! I'd go for Tuesday/Thursday. Personally, I'd rather go for two days in together, eg Wednesday/Thursday.

If it were me I would take the Tuesday/ Thursday option for the very reason you describe. It just simplifies the situation not having to do all that pro-rate faff, because most bank holidays fall on a Monday, leaving you to just have to deal with the Christmas /New Year situation as those holidays fall on any day. But it isn't a show stopper if you don't mind tracking it on a spreadsheet Smile
