Any Audio Typists Out There ....?

Hi everyone, After a career break, I have applied for a full time job in an office where some of the work will be audio typing. I did lots of audio about 20 years ago so I am happy I can quickly get back into the swing, but would really appreciate some advice on the equipment that is now used. I was used to using the old style cassette and headphones. I now have to wear hearing aids (which are bluetooth) but was wondering if any audio typists out there use something more up-to-date - something that I perhaps could stream straight to my hearing aids (as I do with Spotify). I have looked on line and there look like there are a few apps out there - but before I suggest this to my (hopefully) new employer, I thought it might worth asking if anyone has any advice. Thanks so much for reading.

Hi I do audio typing at the drs surgery , the way it works at my workplace is it’s a pair of headphones which you connect to the pc speaker box, and put the earphones in your ears, Then on the pc they is a dictation program with your work list with individual files which you click on , and opens up the dictation and then you type up the dictation. The drs mainly get their dictation typed up automatically on Microsoft word , then you open that file with the dictation already typed up automatically on the letter and then listen to the dictation via the dictation program on the pc and then you make the relevant amendments whilst listening to their dictation. I dunno if Iv made sense here! But that’s how it is works at the office.

The secretaries in my office either wear the office issue massive headsets plugged into their PC or their own headphones - lots of Apple cordless ones seem to get used.

The controls are all with mouse and keyboard instead of the old foot pedals.

Thank you Pauperill - that's interesting to know that the dictation is done automatically and then you amend it!

Aperilspritzplease - that's just what I am after - my hearing aids are bluetooth, just like Apple Air Pods. Do you know any more about what program / equipment they use please? Thank you Smile

Yeh it makes the job so much easier when the letters are typed up and you just amend . One dr doesn’t have those dictation facilities so his letters get typed up by “ scratch “ 😂

I do a bit of audio typing (police) for court. And I wear hearing aids!
Have to be honest, we've moved on from cassettes. Now get a disc that just goes in the computer ( set up with rovi software)
My work ordered great noise reducing headphones for me. So I take my hearing aids out & just use the headphones (on loud). Some of the interviews are long and it can take a couple of days to type up & check. The no comment interviews only take a day or less.

Hello Pink Buffalo! Thank you so much for responding 😀. I think I'd not like taking my hearing aids out as that would mean every time I have to answer the phone or I was interrupted I'd have to put them back in - that would stress me out! I'm guessing there must be something bluetooth out there as a previous poster mentioned secretaries using air pods. I like the idea we've moved on from cassettes 😂 x

Medical secretary here, you need to ask what software your new employer uses. We have switched from analogue tapes to digital sound recording. Every letter is typed from scratch on to a pre-prepared template. Lots of our common words and phrases are on auto text which is a massive timesaver. Your employer should provide you with all the equipment you need. Be worth letting them know about your hearing aids as they might need to order special equipment for you before you start

Hi Op!
Sorry I'd gone to bed!
Umm, not sure on the software. IT had to install on my computer so I could do it. I just know it says rovi (I always thought it meant record of video interview, but I don't know!) really sorry!
I get a day off answering the phones etc whilst I'm doing it as it takes ages.
Good luck OP, I'm sure you'll find what works for you!
