Not knowing what I want to do for a living!

I am currently 33 and work for the NHS in an admin role at band 4. I left school with 10 GCSEs and have been working in the public sector ever since. I know I am lucky to have a job and one that pays above the National Minimum Wage, but I don't want to spend the next 35+ years doing this kind of work.

Unfortunately I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with the rest of my working life.

Has anyone ever been in a similar position that can give me some inspiration?

Derpy84 - Congratulations on finding a career that you enjoy. You're right about sometimes having to take a step into the unknown to find something you enjoy.

LifeCoachRuth - Do you know what the best way would be to find a suitable careers coach for what I need from them?

Eisenberg You could start with a Google search for a career coach in your area unless you are happy to work on the phone or Skype, then the location is less important. There are some good online coach directories or ask around and see if anyone you know could recommend someone. Check that the person is suitably qualified or accredited, but most importantly make sure they are a good fit for you and you have a good rapport with them. Most coaches will offer you a free consultation first anyway. Good luck exploring the possibilities for your future.

You could try looking through Indeed etc. Jobs such as Girl Fridays working a country house (just an example) but covered childcare, gardening, shopping etc because it is varied and most jobs now are stream-lined and it makes them very boring imo. Just saying if you searched all jobs might get some ideas 😕

TerryTucker- That's a good suggestion.

Some ideas:

  • Do you know anyone with a job you think is interesting (this is how I found a career path).
  • Have a look at college / Uni prospectuses.
  • Have a look round the NHS, on NHS job sites- there are hundreds of careers there.

Also agree with PP that public sector is one of best for annual leave and, depending on role, for flexible working.

I took an online careers quiz and followed the advice which accompanied my results. Quite different line of work to that I had been in.

Spent next four weeks rewriting cv, researching career opening and further training then landed an amazing job, best I've ever had. The work is so interesting, the people are fantastic and the conditions are better than I could have imagined.

So I would say that your future could be v bright indeed.
Good luck!

@Picklepost, any chance you remember which online quiz? There are so many...
