Business name advice?

Originally posted in the 'doghouse' talk by mistake

I am starting a business as a sole trader. Initially, I will be offering a proofreading service only, but I would like to diversify into other areas of publishing in the future.

I am not keen on the idea of using my own name, mainly because I'm not intending to work independently forever and don't want to have to rename.

I've jotted a few phrases down which are based on word play:

Wordy Wise
Write Right
Miss Print
Word Nerd
Well Read

You get the idea! But I think these sound quite tacky, predictable and old-fashioned.

There is so much advice out there; it has to be meaningful, it has to be self-explanatory, it has to have a story, it has to be short and easy to remember, it has to be suitable for SEO etc. My head is spinning!

I want to come across as classy, vibrant and modern, but also friendly, human and professional.

I am still in the early stages of planning so I don't have a USP yet but I am starting up, as I say, initially as a proofreader. This will be on People Per Hour, to enable me to build up a portfolio and gain experience.

Has anyone any advice or suggestions, please? :-) Or obviously, any other relevant advice in general.

I like some of yours tbh. Maybe Write Rite? I like Miss Print

100% Proof

We've just come up with a lot of names which all have some sort of meaning to me.

We've come out with a combination of 2 surnames which is Bouldsmith.

Not sure yet what the suffix to this will be but this would be the first word of the business name.

What do you think?

I just don't think that the word play ones are classy and I want something with classy connotations.

I'm guessing you're going to want to create a domain from the name ? so it needs to be catchy and easy to spell. therefore something like "write rite" is definitely not ok. If you went to a networking event and verbally gave it to someone I doubt they'd know how to spell it.
Bouldsmith most people will leave out the U.. although this is definitely the best name compared to others mentioned so far.

concentrate more on easy spelling and catchy domain.

DownUdderer · 22/07/2018 06:03

Yeah I think it needs to be an easy one to type into google etc

Miss Print is awful- sorry.

Don't try to be too clever with the name- you will fall off the same cliff as all those businesses called Pawz, Cool Kutz etc.

I too am a sole trader and have wrestled with the same issue.

Try to incorporate your function within your name.

glamglittergirl for instance will alienate most men and 50% of women.

glamglittergirl · 22/07/2018 10:11

Yes, I agree the 'clever' world play ones are just naff. I have a U in Bouldsmith as that is the surname but I could get rid of the U.

speakout Did you manage to find on your were happy with?

Please may I ask you to cast your eyes on these for your opinions?

Garden Gate
Friendly Robin
Dovecote
Hartwell
White Rooms
Blues and Greens

Many thanks I appreciate your feedback :-)

I meant EVERYONE please for opinions

I like Hartwell.

glamglittergirl · 22/07/2018 10:22

Just to add, there have been a few that we've thought of that have already been taken by similar businesses. I am hoping that means we are on the right track!

wordsmith.co.uk doesn't seem to have been taken if a simple Google search is any guide.

Wordsmith.com and wordsmith.org exist already
