Has anyone bought a franchise? Does/did it work out?

Any tips for someone who's thinking about it? I've worked for blue-chips and startups but never worked for myself - and never even thought about a franchise up until now!

Does anyone have any experience/horror/success stories?

I'm having baby2 in a couple of weeks, but thinking this is a good option for a back-to-work/dip the toe in/try something new adventure for afterwards (although 2 boys under 2 might be adventure enough)

just got a few tips from a lawyer mate of mine who closes down crappy franchises - obv stuff really but it hadn't occured to me - duh!
a good franchise is interested in you and in maintaining a relationship with you via fees etc rather than just a massive one off payment for the franchise then nothing. they also want to make sure you are up to the job - interviews etc. check out the contract (another obv one!). make sure if you speak to any franchisees that they really are franchisees and not just someone pretending to be one. be suspicious of any with big start up fees.
that's all I remember now - sure there was lots more

Do you have a specific franchise in mind? You may do well to find out if a well known franchise such as Rosemary Conley / Tumbletots or whatever needs anyone in your area. If you stick to a company where you know franchises work well in other areas then you should be OK

There is a specific one I have in mind - and i've spoken to a franchisee whose class I used to go to with DS and she loves it. Fits round school hols, is rewarding and people facing, makes money without too much fuss, etc.
There are start-up costs and annual fees and an interview/application process. Have also met the owner who seems genuinely erm genuine and nice (must be tired!)

Sounds like you've done your homework - good luck, hope it works out for you

I have done a franchise - it didn't work out but that was neither my fault nor the franchisor's - just particular circumstances. My DH writes about franchises as part of his job - I can ask him for info if you have any specific questions. And I can certainly give you the benefit of my experience if it would be helpful.

Thanks TigerFeet, I know there's competition in the area we're moving to so I might not even get it, altho it's already beeen suggested that I might want to share the franchise with someone else. Still v early days, I think, but has made me really think about a franchise generally as I can't imagine me doing office hours for a few years yet - and DH's job has kicked off in a way that neither of us expected.

Rosa would love the benefit of your experience! Do you mind me asking why it didn't work out? Is your DH a journalist? Would love some general info - I don't have specific questions at the mo as I don't know enough about it yet but I'm sure i will have lots.

Anyone know how to stop a baby kicking? Soo tired but seem to have a game of one aside going on...
