hello all, I know many of you have given me good advice on many an occasion, but I'm here again with another question. Which looks better on a cv - teaching at a good London university - most likely undergraduates; or lecturing graduates for a middle ranking US university - they get sent to London for a term? by teaching I mean giving smaller group classes that supplement lectures given by somone else - with no say in the reading list or subjects covered; by lecturing I mean designing the course and reading list and having pretty much total control over the subject matter. I've got a big grin on my face because I've been offered the lecturing work, but I'm very interested to hear your opinions.

Ooh Hatwoman, congratulations.

Unless you are desperate to get a weighty insitution on your cv (eg if none of your previous study/academic experience was anywhere with much academic credibility) I would have thought that experience in course design trumps the kind of teaching that postgrads are often employed to do on a casual basis, even if the university is less prestigious.
But other people might disagree so interesting to see what they say....

thanks Kathy - both my undergradt and post grad were at weighty places, so I'm thinking like you - that designing the course would be good experience (but hard work!)

Oh wow, I'm so pleased Congratulations! I would completely agree with Kathy, much better to have the meaningful experience of creating courses than delivering stuff that someone else is ultimately responsible for. Fantastic

Have to agree, (plus, you will probably get better treatment).

Congratulations.

Hi hatwoman... thanks for directing me to this, and congratulations!

Yes, I agree with everyone else. Go for the London lecturing. The other one would probably be easier, as you would pretty much be told what to do and would just have to turn up and do it. (Oh and the students would probably be more motivated.) But the 'proper' lecturing will definitely stand you in good stead.

Good luck. When do you start? Let us know how you get on!
