How to become an electrician

Hi, I'm hoping I've posted in the right place! I'm currently a credit controller but have been trying to change career for years. I had an electrician round a few months ago and was fascinated plus I think it would fit in better with having a child although obviously I realise there would be call outs etc. Does anyone know how to go about this?

You start with a qualification that would be usually taken at your local college I believe. I think you can use a 19+ learner loan to fund. Good luck with the career change Smile

It would have to be an apprenticeship or a college course. I'm not sure if you're eligible for apprenticeships if you're over 25 though? But a course could probably be done in the evenings.

I know a few electricians some own their own van and tools, some work for companies who provide van and tools. They have completed health and safety courses. All of them travel lots of miles. If you are looking to be self employed you would also need public liability insurance.

Thank you.

FYI most of the electricians that I know are male. I know a couple of females. The females do the job equally as well as the males. Depending on what sort of electrical work that you did, there could be an element of lone working in a strange places possibly night working. There are obviously lots of different types of electricians example domestic, commercial, industrial.
