Notice while waiting for DBS check?!

Hi all,

Wondering if someone could help me. I've just recently accepted a new role which requires a dbs check. This could take 2-8 weeks. How do I go about handing in my notice to my employer?

Do I wait for the dbs to come back and then work a months notice or can I let them know that I'm leaving and waiting for a dbs?

I'm just worried about the DBS, if it takes 8 weeks then having to work a further 4 weeks notice.

Not sure how this all works as my current job is the only job I've ever had Blush been there a very long while.

If anyone could help me understand that would be great! TIA!

When you hand in your notice you have to confirm your leaving date. You can't say that you will leave when the dbs comes through.

First stop is to talk to the new employer - do they have any tasks/training or familiarisation work that you can do prior to the dbs coming through? If so can they give you a start date that is independent of the dbs? If not then they will have to accept that you can't start till a month after the dbs comes through. I wouldn't
hand in notice until in receipt of a confirmed unconditional job offer in writing.

If you don't have any issues that could present in a DBS, and an uncomplexed work and life history to date, you will likely find that the DBS will come through quicker. It doesn't always follow, but it stands to reason that if there are no matters arising that require further verification, then it goes through on the lower end of the timescale, ie 2-3 weeks, rather than 7-8 weeks.

Agreed, you shouldn't hand in your notice until you have received an unconditional offer, but hopefully the above gives you some sense of what happens and timescales involved.

Ok thank you for your replies!

My new employer needs to contact my current employer for a reference this week. Does anyone know what I can do in this case? It could take up to 8 weeks for the DBS so I don't want to hand in my notice just yet!

Well, that'll blow the whistle. Your current employers will know you're thinking of leaving, but they can't assume you've actually resigned until they get it in writing - which you'll do when you're good and ready.

I've had 3x DBS this year and all were back in 3 days.

It's the people putting it through that will be delaying as if you do it right away it'll be quick.

They shouldnt be asking for a reference before you hand in your notice. Ring them to make sure. I wouldnt hand in my notice before the dbs check either.
