Is this legal?

Hi all,
Just after some quick advice if anyone can help?
I'm off on mat leave in 6 weeks and have just been told that 4 members of my team will no longer be reporting into me when I return. That's almost 50% of my team. Not going to lie, I'm pretty pissed off but can they legally do this? I'm guessing so, but just thought I'd check.
Thanks!

Does it change your role substantially?

Don't know the legalities but if your wages, contract and hours are not affected I'd enjoy the more time that gives me to concentrate of my gorgeous new baby. Did they give any reason, it's a long way off till you return, anything could happen, people could leave. Congrats on your pregnancy.Smile

Yes it's a huge change to my role, basically 50% of it taken away. In every other company I've worked for this sits within the scope of my role. No change to salary however. Bonus is significantly reducing but that's a company wide change.

I am only off for 6 months, and whilst I will love my baby I love working too. No credible reason has been given (though essentially it's that the owner fancies the team leader who will now be reporting directly to him with the change!)

Surely it just means that you have less people to oversee, not that your role with the remaining team is different? If they’re not changing your salary or terms then I would think it’s perfectly fine.

Yes that's what I thought. Thanks anyway. It's just a huge disappointment

If they have taken responsibility away from you because you’re pregnant/taking mat leave, then no they can’t do this. They are not allowed to treat you less favourably because you’re pregnant.

They've not said that it's anything to do with pregnancy / Mat leave but it's all rather coincidental....
