Returning to a previous employer...?

I left my previous role 15 months ago, for lower banded role that supposedly had lots of opportunities and scope as it was a brand new role. I was told there was potential for a regrading which as yet has not materialised and opportunities to undertake MSc modules which I have since found out I am unable to take as they are not directly relevant to my role. I have recently become aware of a role that has come up in the area I worked in previously, very similar duties but a higher band than I left on. Would I be mad to consider applying?

Only you can answer that, me personally never go back .
What are the reasons you left previous employer for ?

Sounds ok from what you’ve said. Apart from the ‘never go back’ adage, is there any other reservation you’d have about working for your old company again?

Never say never. I left a place because, despite being the loveliest workplace ever, it was a small team and a promotion wouldn’t happen unless someone left (v unlikely due to it being lovely!) or died. If there was a vacancy at manager level now I’d be in like a shot and tbh I know I’d get it. But if you’d left due to anything other than that or perhaps relocation then my gut would say no.

I went back after 10 years...it was weird, quite a few people still there, totally different role and department. It's turned out fine!

At a place I audit, one of the staff left for a job with better pay, better prospects, better terms
within months she realised that the grass was not greener
and returned
luckily her manager was clever enough that returners are often loyal
and its working out just fine

Thank you all for your replies I did actually love my job bit left because of problems with one of the managers who was quite difficult to deal with. She has now left and it was one of the management team who mentioned the role to me. I know there have been changes to the management structure which should make the role better and hopefully ensure more opportunities/development.
I do understand the 'Don't go back to what broke you' train of thought and I think that is the biggest thing to overcome. Its in no way guaranteed, I have to apply and be interviewed etc. Decisions, decisions...

I think you have to be completely honest with yourself about why you left. Was it just this manager which has now moved in or were there also other factors?
