Working abroad, struggling to find appropriate insurance

Hi Smile

My dad is struggling to find appropriate medical insurance for working in Malaysia - it needs to cover age 50+ (all he can find is aimed at students) and for supervisory work in electrical engineering on a shipyard. Needs to include working at heights. (Again, all he can find is basic manual work).

Can anyone point me in a general direction?

Oh and it’s only temporary (one month), not annual cover

His employer should cover him for this .

He’s self employed

If it’s only a month contract and he is habitually resident somewhere else he could get travel insurance and, I guess, take a risk. The risk is if something happens and the insurance company find out he was actually working in MY he wouldn’t be covered.
I would approach an insurance broker, there are some expat brokers in MY and may be able to help.
If the employer is a Malaysian company they have to provide insurance. By law as I understand it. Although I am not an expert in employment law, I do live and work here.
One month is a tricky timeframe.

Sorry just saw your self employed bit.
Hmmm.
If he regularly works overseas then he must have some contacts in insurance... ? Getting insurance as an expat here is very straightforward, but the one month thing is going to be the problem I think. Sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Thanks penyu - he usually does contract work in the UK, or previously worked for someone else abroad, this is the first time it is self-employed abroad. He did sort it though, spoke to the company that does his UK liability insurance and they were able to set up a bespoke package for him :)
