I'm not a SALT but my niece is training to be one. She is finding it very rewarding but quite hard work. There is a fair bit of theory including anatomy of the head and neck. From what I understand they pay isn't that good. She loves it though and i would imagine that it would be a massivly rewarding job to do.

My best friend is a SALT. She's currently in a research post. From what I can can tell the job itself is fab, but the people she has worked with determine her enjoyment at work.

Her first degree was in English Language/Linguistics and then she did a further 2 years in SALT training.

The worst thing she finds I think is working on her own. When working in schools, she can spend entire days seeing no adult at all; just endless driving from school to school with a snatched cuppa in a staff room and lunch in the car. I guess it depends how you specialise.

Pay is roughly similiar to a teacher's I think, but research seems to pay more than practising.

NHS pay is crap but private SALTS can charge 55 quid an hour. DS1's current (private) SALT absolutely loves her job as she is completely fascinated by autistic children- she used to work at an autistic school, now she works as part of multi-disciplinary team- mainly with autistic kids- then she has her private caseload as well. She's doing an MA in communication disorders part time as well.

Previous SALTS have said they left the NHS as they found it impossible to do their jobs as they only got to see children once every 6 months.

I think the adult NHS SALTS may have a better time in terms of caseload. The one I know said she chose to work with adults as she couldn't cope with parents
