Annual review notice

How much notice would you expect to be given for your annual review? my Manager has just told me it's going to be tomorrow afternoon yet my colleague has been told his is next Wednesday.

I have just returned from a day and a half sick so am catching up today. I really wanted more time to prepare as I have a few issues I want to raise....

That's not a lot of notice, have you asked for it to be later?

I said it's not a lot of time for me to prepare and he responded with a 'oh it'll be fine'?!

I've received an email invite so am going to suggest an alternative time I think...

So I asked if I could do it next week as I have been out for a day and a half, catching up today and busy in tomorrow morning but no he'd rather get it done this week as he's got loads on. Could I possibly swap with my colleague and I have his slot next week, no he'd rather get it done this week.

Ok fine and I left the office..

It sounds like there's more to this than meets the eye. It doesn't sound like this manager is supportive of you. I'd never spring an annual review on someone with 24 hours notice, that is totally unreasonable.

I would raise it to HR/union. I bet there is something in your company handbook about annual reviews that gives guidance to managers and staff about how to get the most from the annual review process, which doesn't include giving staff only 24 hours to prepare!

Thanks Daisy. Unfortunately I was given a 'formal warning' that my attention to detail isn't up to scratch, I made a mistake in a letter last month and one in a spreadsheet in December?? none of these have been mentioned before, but because of these I'm deemed to be unreliable and sloppy. He's the boss and there are only 4 of us in the company so he is HR unfortunately.

I'm really unhappy in my job, so much so that I dread going into work every day. I told my boss I don't ask him questions if I'm stuck as whenever I do I'm made to feel stupid, which he appeared incredulous at.

I have an interview week Tuesday for another role. It's less money but I'd rather be in a position where I'm respected and happy...

If you only made 2 mistakes then it’s likely your face just doesn’t fit. Go to the Annual Review, raise your concerns, then hand your notice if you aren’t happy with the results.
