Not sure about new job :-(

I left my old job after 11 years because of a hefty commute and being unable to afford the commute. I've only been in my new position a few days but I feel so down about it, there is nothing wrong with it per se but I'm just finding it so hard being in a different culture and working on different things. I feel like I'm in mourning for my old colleagues and job, I was so comfortable there and knew what I was doing etc!

Has anyone else been in the same position? I know I need to be positive and give it time but just feel so worried!

Give yourself at least 2 months before you begin to make decisions. You need time to get your feet under the desk. Don't be hard on yourself, a decade in a job is a long time. Just think, no long commute, fab! More time for you/family/friends.

Thanks I need to give it time/ stop being so hard on myself I agree!

I’m in the same position as you, I’m working for the same company different position and with new staff. I’ve been here for 4 months and from day 1 I kind of felt it wasn’t right. I’ve been trying to give it time but I don’t think it’s going to change. I’m anxious and worried and I can’t switch off at home. I’ve been looking at new jobs but again I’m worried about this and also feel guilty to my employer if I found a new job.

Don't feel guilty beebee I think 4 months is enough time to see if it is right or not! If you can find something else and you think you'll be happier then you should go for it! It's hard though isn't it!

I was you 7 months ago. I tried to quit but they talked me round, I’m now so glad I’m stayed! It takes a while to settle in but if you leave and get another job you’ll feel the same! Just stick it out

Thanks Phoebe. I'm trying to focus on the positives for now. Glad to hear you settled in to your job after all.

A few days is not long enough to come to this decision!

downbutnotout2018 · 21/06/2018 13:57

I did the same and I'm freaking out too. I've taken on more responsibility and thinking fondly about my old, no stress, part time job. I've even uprooted the kids and moved 2 hrs to do this. I probably need my own thread!

nowifi · 21/06/2018 16:47

Yes I think you probably need another thread haha! 2 hours and moving the kids does sound stressful it must have been a tough decision!

I did the same when I started a new role after 15 years in my previous company.
Initially I hated it and decided to stick it out for 3 months just to avoid my c.v being panned. After 3 months it wasn't great but not so bad so again decided to stay for a total of 6 months for my cvs sake.
Just completed 2 years and couldn't be happier or more settled.
Already get the jitters about starting out again somewhere one day - but know it'll be fine, it's just a comfort thing and takes time to aclimatise

I'm just finishing up my first month in a new job after 12 years in the same company. I was the same until this week, and even now it's all a bit terrifying - just with all the new faces, not to mention the new systems etc.

What I've done is try to work out who's able to help me/who looks friendly, and tried to make tea at the same time as them, go for coffee etc. I've quickly found a few friends and it's suddenly less unnerving. Worth a go!

Glad to hear it's worked out for others! I think when you've been in another job for so long it's always going to be hard isn't it.
