Have you ever quit a job soon after starting?

Advice please :(

I haven't been in a job long at all but it's not going well. I keep making mistakes, colleagues haven't accepted me and I don't seem to fit in with the culture. It's a career change and not what I was expecting, as I don't even do the things I was strongest at in my previous job :(

Managers have been making a big deal of the fact I am on the quieter side. I am quite a private and independent person, I do have social anxiety but I thought I was generally okay - I'm never going to be an extrovert but I do talk to people and I'm friendly etc. But apparently that's not enough.

So my question is - have you ever been miserable in a new job and quit very soon? What was the reaction and did this harm you in your job search?

I left a job once within my probation period when only a week's notice was needed. It was quite a new company and they just weren't getting any work in, we spent our days trying to fill in time. I started at another job and the company folded a couple of weeks after I'd left leaving the employees with a fight to get paid, I had a lucky escape.
Another job I had I went for an interview elsewhere after being there two weeks. I hated it. Didn't get the other job though so stayed and found things improved and I ended up being there happily for over ten years. Now I would always give it a good couple of months to see how things settle. It can take a while to adjust.

I don't know. I went home on a Friday at normal time, and emailed her letting her know I wouldn't be returning on Monday. She rang my mobile a couple of times but I ignored it.

I hadn't signed a contract so there was nothing she could do.

I went in on day 2 and handed my notice in. Had to work another 4 days notice period. It was a total mistake taking the job in the first place and the best thing I did to get out as soon as I did. If you aren't happy just go!

I sympathise op. I started a new job just over 2 months ago. I hate it - it's much more junior than I was expecting, there's no training and I'm twice the age of everyone else (so some lovely casual ageism - comedy incredulity that I have a mobile, can use Excel etc Hmm). I'm on month 3 of photocopying and filing. It's a change of career but I'm beyond bored and sick of being treated like an idiot. I don't have another job to go to and can't afford to be out of work for more than a few weeks but I'm considering quitting any way not least because I'm not sure I'll pass my probation (I'm not 'banter'-y enough) and also because I'm losing touch with the skill set and confidence I brought to the role.

Luckily my contract hadn't arrived so there was nothing they could do.

There wouldn’t have been much more they could have done even if your contract had arrived! It’s a bit of paper, not a set of handcuffs

1 week but had another job to go to. I started on day 1 and had a call from another job I applied for the wanted to interview me ASAP. I hate to leave work an hour early mid week so lied and said I had the dentist. Was given the job with a start date of Monday.
