Really want to go out to work now. I don't have anyone to have the children in the holidays. Any ideas as to what I could do for a job maybe term time.

Does your school have an after school club that operates a holiday club also ?

imaginaryfriend · 22/05/2007 12:24

Can you work within the education system somehow so you get to have the same holidays?

Bananaknickers · 22/05/2007 12:27

no school holiday club here. What jobs are available in the education department do you think? I am really frustrated with being unable to work. DH gets in just before 7pm so I think an evening job would be out of the question to

Can you work freelance and just work limited hours in the school holidays?

fennel · 22/05/2007 12:32

Around here there are quite a few holiday clubs/schemes for children in the holidays. Some are school based, some council-run. Some workplaces run them too. YOu don't always have to have children at a school to use a school holiday club either.

bozza · 22/05/2007 12:34

childminder

GiantSquirrelSpotter · 22/05/2007 12:35

Have you phoned the childcare information service or whatever it's called at your local council?

yeahinaminute · 22/05/2007 12:35

Panic basically !!!!

ktmoomoo · 22/05/2007 12:36

im a relif worker at an intermidet care home for the elderly so i can choose my hours so im off work in half terms xx

mylittlestar · 22/05/2007 12:40

secretarial/admin/office based work in a school or college would be perfect so that you have the holidays off too
(assuming you'd like that sort of work!)

HuwEdwards · 22/05/2007 12:40

holiday club.

Our own school soesn't do a holiday club but our sports centre does and loads of other schools.

Homebird8 · 22/05/2007 12:42

Bananaknickers, my DH doesn't get back until after yours and I have an excellent job which still fits in, in the evenings and whenever I want. I'd be happy to tell you how it could work for you if you e-mail me at drruthwilliams at netscape dot net

WotzanameOoohhhjarmaflip · 22/05/2007 12:44

School holiday clubs local ones (like YMCA and local leisure centers run them), help share days with other working mums, ask for help from grandparents, take turns with dh, take time off and work from home.

TBH the 'help share days with other working mums' is great they all have a lovely time.

I've been pondering this dilemma too, and it is the same issue either full or part time . Reckon over the whole year I'd have about 16 weeks to cover , with possibly only 5 weeks holiday , probably 3 weeks of holiday clubs, no gp's etc to call on. How do you manage , as on the sort of earnings I've seen advertised I don't think I'd break even in holiday time and frankly if I'm not going to be actually making anything I'd rather spend that time with the kids myself. Would CM's do such ad hoc care ? Has anyone gone for a job interview and successfully negotiated term time only ?

fennel · 22/05/2007 13:12

Our local school based club is £11 a day, discount for siblings. It's a lot cheaper than pre-school care, and probably than childminders.

bozza · 22/05/2007 15:49

Ah you see lizs I use the childminder in termtime too. So yes it is more expensive than a holiday club (£28/day). And £9/day in termtime. But this is the first holiday I have seen a holiday club advertised round here and DS is in Y1.

I currently work 3 full days. So I have thought about when DD starts school in Sept 2008, going to two full days and two half days and only employing the CM 2days a week term time and holidays. This would:

allow me to do pick ups and drop offs 3x a week instead of 2
save me a third of my bill
mean that I have one day a week to cover in the school hols via my leave/ DH's leave/holiday clubs/childcare swaps with others in similar positions etc, which I think is feasible.

But as it happens I expect to be made redundant before then.
