Redundancy and p60 woes

DP Dead made redundant last Oct. He started a new job in Nov. He hasn't received a P60 from either job and we are to get cracking with a claim for tax credits. He earns considerably less now. I'm convinced we just email the gov website and get a new copy? DP isn't convinced. Can anyone help?

He should only receive a p60 from whoever employed him in the 5thof April this year and I believe the deadline for handing them out is 31st May - if he doesn’t get it from his employer tomorrow, he needs to request a copy from them.

Ahhhhhh good to know. I be been in the same job for years so didn't know how it worked? Do u know if he can request it from work after tomorrow?

You don't get a P60 if you left employment during the tax year - instead you get a P45 at the time you leave employment and that contains all the info on what you've earnt and how much you've paid tax on etc.

His work should give him one automatically, but if they don't he should definitely chase them up. Copies can be printed from the payroll software after the may 31st deadline, but I don't think they are obliged to give a second p60 - they are however legally obliged to give a first!

www.gov.uk/paye-forms-p45-p60-p11d/p60

The link above confirms that you only get a P60 if you're employed on 5 April. As the OP's DH was made redundant last October, he won't get a P60 from the employer who made him redundant as he wasn't employed by them on the last day of the 2017/18 tax year on 5 April 2018.

So to apply.for possible.tax credits I would still need the p45 from his previous employer April 17 till he was new redundant in the Oct? Never done it before do have no clue?

I’ve never applied for tax credits, but if you need his total income for the tax year then yes. The p45 from the old employer would show the income from April 17 to Oct 17 and the p60 would show from Oct 17 to March 18, so added together would give the full year.

I would hope that would be enough for tax credits, but you can never be too sure with hmrc Hmm
