I work for a small but national organisation. I am on a permanent contract. The org activities are based in education, and so historically, most staff (and all staff with education contact as part of their role) have been employed on term time contracts.
The organisation is growing. Some activities need to be carried out during the school holidays. There are staff members who are not on term time contracts, who have previous carried out these tasks. It has been decided however, that term time working is a luxury, and that we all have to change to 52 week contracts. There will apparently be "benefits" added to our current contracts, but so far all that has been confirmed is one extra day holiday. Newly posted job ads for the same role are for the same salary and benefits I currently have, but 6 weeks holiday not 13.
Is this legal? Can they really just force us to give up 7 weeks holiday? I would not even have considered this role if it were not for it being term time only, so I am particularly pissed off. We won't get any more detail for a couple of weeks yet, but I can't figure out if it will be best to get legal advice or whether just to keep my head down till I decide if I want to join the exodus.
