Working a few hours here and there - how to charge?

I'm starting regular work for a friend's organisation, however, it's not regular hours so some months will have quite a few hoiurs, others hardly any.

We have an agreed hourly rate and I will keep a log of hours worked.

Do I invoice just "as me" ie. I am a self employed individual? Do I need to register etc? I have no idea as have always been employed before.

Want to make it as easy but tax effective as possible for me (I am unlikely to hit any tax bands based on this income alone, but I do have investments that may bring in income in this tax year so I don't want to run into anything unexpected along the way!)

TIA.

Congrats on your new line of business! Yes, you'll need to register with HMRC as a self-employed Sole Trader. Then you'll need to submit a tax return every year. On that, you can record all your income, from this job and your rental properties.

Call HMRC, they'll tell you what you need to do and send you all the stuff.

Good luck!

Thanks for that, I'll get on the HMRC website. They've always been helpful with things I have had to handle before, just never been self employed!
