Childcare for business trip that occurs on non-working day

Before I ask my employer I wanted to check...

I am being asked to go on a work trip on a non-working day when my DD is not usually in nursery. To go on this trip I will need to find childcare (DH is self employed so cannot just take a day off otherwise we lose a day's income). So I will need to pay for an extra day in nursery - about £65.

Can I claim this back as a travel expense from work? I understand that this wouldn't be appropriate in usual circumstances but since it's a day off that I am giving up I don't see why I should also be out of pocket with childcare.

Can anyone advise? Thanks

Are you not being paid for the extra day?

You can always ask. It won’t be a tax exempt expense though.

I may get a day in lieu but that doesn't mean much as I don't get any more money. It's hard enough to use all my AL as it is

Well that was easy, I asked my boss and he said fine Grin

Great Smile

I used to just ask for an extra day’s pay in situations like that rather than a day off Smile

That's a good idea, I'll see if I can get that too!

If you're part-time, shouldn't you be paid extra for the time, to give you the same rate of pay as a full-timer? As presumably a full-timer would be paid for this time anyway?

Wish I'll be offered time in lieu as compensation for working on my day off. I work in a job where overtime is required anyway and I don't really have a problem with working on a day off (my employer is very good at eg allowing time off if DD is sick without making me take leave so a bit of give and take is fine). It's just paying out of my own pocket for an extra day of nursery that's annoying

If I had to work on my day off my self employed dh would cover and work a day at the weekend to catch up instead. Is that an option?

Sadly no. He's already employed but as a contractor so can only work office hours
