Should I ride out my contract or jump ship

This is going to be a lot long winded so apologies in advance.

On paper I look highly qualified/high achiever.

I started a one year contract in mid-January in an industry I have been out of for over five years. However, they felt that I would be able to pick up it again easily and therefore I was able to negotiate a senior pay for a middle management role.

In a meeting with my manager, she indicated that there was a vacancy possibility after my contract ended - although I would need to prove myself. I said great, I'm up for the challenge. However, I had also heard that this supposed role was at a much junior level than what I am now in through someone else, but manager had indicated they would be able to prove I was worth having on and take on a senior role. At the same time there was ongoing interviews for this junior role. I also indicated that I wasn't willing on taking anything below my current pay grade.

I was subsequently straddling two roles, and not doing very well in either, and ended up messing things up royally.

Anyway - I made clear that I wasn't capable of taking on both roles at the same time and then struggled to get back on track in one role but eventually did and finally felt settled.

Last week - had another catch up with my manager - who's tone had now changed - asking me where I saw myself next. I indicated that I was looking, but given that I have another six months on the contract i wasn't actively doing so.

So my question is: do you think this supposed role actually ever existed or were they trying to get the most out of me. Or do you think that I messed up too badly that they no longer feel I am suitable for the role.

Hope this makes sense.

What’s the difference, really? I think it’s clear this isn’t a place where you have a future long term. I would guess they were being honest enough with you in that they probably would have been willing to make the role more senior if you had absolutely dazzled them. But you didn’t, through no fault of your own it sounds. Either way you should be looking fo move on to a position that would be a better fit for you.

I guess you are right. But lesson learnt would be not to take on everything and then not being good at anything.

Also I guess I'm slightly pissed off, as at the time when this was "on offer" I felt had that there was really no role and they were putting a carrot out in front of me to jump through hoops to get the most out of me iyswim. The senior role that supposedly was on offer had last October been cut from headcount through cost-saving efforts-- so why would they fill two roles?

Manager also asked if i was interested in various other roles at the firm that were currently open.
