LEGAL OPINION? DH's boss wants to see my bank details! Is this legal?

DH works in public sector and is having some security vetting for a new job, and part of it is they want to see his financial records to make sure he's not being blackmailed/has a gambling habit/a fraudster etc. However, he was told today that the vetting people want to see my bank statements too and my credit card statements. I am mightily p*ed off about this as I don't work for them, and see it as a huge violation of my privacy - can I tell them to shove it without them being able to refuse him the job?

He was in Romania until a year ago, he's now doing language training for his new post which he goes to in August, but I'm not sure I should really say where. When he was in Indonesia (not as Ambassador) a mum at school kept asking me if he could help her sister get a visa - I'm not sure if I want that kind of thing on MN.

Thanks guys - the interview was apparently 3 hours long - just the vetting bit, and they asked him about everything he said, from how well he got on with my mother (who is as mad as a box of frogs but thankfully his natural tact prevented him from saying that!) to whether or not we 'swung'. I did wind my neck in, but with lack of grace, I confess.......
