9 month probation period

I think this is long.
What trial period does your role have?

IME they tend to be between 3 - 6 months depending on the role (public sector / civil service are often 6 months).

9 months seems a long time not to have confirmed employment because it tends to mean they don't give you a decent amount of notice period (it normally elevates from, for example, 1 week either side to 1 month either side).

I'd be put off working for a company that wouldn't value me enough to need 9 months to decide if they want to keep me.

How do you feel about that?

daisychain01 · 18/04/2018 15:26

Sorry I meant to say -

it normally elevates from, for example, 1 week either side before probation successfully completed to 1 month either side, after confirmation of probation.

Mine was 3 years! Used to be standard for roles at my level, but it's now been reduced to 12 months.

timeisnotaline · 18/04/2018 15:30

I would ask them why they think it would take 9 months to decide! It would put me off - smacks of incompetence or a shitty culture

Its a part-time post in the local Council.

Do they have problems with staff or problems retaining staff?

unintentionalthreadkiller · 18/04/2018 17:32

Do you get more benefits are passing probation - pension etc?

phoenix1973 · 18/04/2018 17:56

Pension is from the beginning
There is 1 sicknote there and it seems this may not have been mismanaged.
I've got excellent attendance (it's an internal post).
It's just odd. I'm in the post now but haven't signed the particulars. Ive been paid once, correctly, and will be paid again in a week.

I don't think 9 months is excessive. We used to have 12 months, now down to 6 months, but I wouldn't hesitate to extend if I had any concerns.
