Profession subscriptions

Just a quick question - I have handed in my notice and for my job professional subscriptions have been paid in my behalf. Previous leavers have been made to repay this and its made quite a dent in salary.

Earlier in the year I did a lot of extra work and didn't get offered payment or time in lieu.

if mentioned to repay these - am I wrong to say fine but you didn't pay me for the extra days worked. For reference, my contract states 4 days a week and for one month I worked 10 extra days and the payment due would balance out the repayment of subscriptions.

It would make a huge dent in my pocket

I don't want to leave on bad terms but I don't want to be taken advantage of (any more than I already have been!)

Two questions. First are there terms clearly set out stating that professional subscriptions are repayable in the event of termination?

Secondly do you have a solid basis for claiming the overtime should have been paid? Either an agreement at the time, or contractual provision for paid overtime/time in lieu, or alternatively does your contract say that a certain amount of unpaid overtime is expected. Plus also does overtime normally get paid in your role/organisation?

If it's an annual subscription, how much time is left to run on the Membership year? Does it stipulate (if there's a clawback clause in your Contract of Employment) that you only need to repay a % pro-rate amount, eg: from your final day of employment to the end of the Membership year.

If so, could you reason with them that it's fair for you to pay for any residual membership after you leave, but any spent amount while you've been in their employment, was approved due to your role. They gained a benefit from it in some notional way.
