So says my three-year-old dd. She would say that - I'm a SAHM, and so are all my friends... Does that mean she'll grow up to be a Stepford Wife now, or a militant feminist, pitying the ruined life of her poor mother?

gosh didn't realise that this converstaion had moved from the lighthearted.

Anyway it would be impossible for me to work at the moment- no employer would put up with the number of interruptions they would have had last year.

Edam - I used to get kids at school calling me Mummy - it's very common in primary school (I taught in secondary school though.... )
BTW - I thought this was going to be light hearted chat too! In our Mums and babies group the toddlers always look a bit startled if a Daddy comes along (but then, to be fair, the daddies always a look a bit like that too

Just wanted to say "thank you" for all the friendly messages. Glad that overall the light-hearted tone won.

Although I do worry what my dd thinks I do all day. She told me that when she grows up she'll do all the shopping and cleaning so I can watch TV all day!

daisy1999 · 07/08/2004 19:57

On the other hand Dd2 said mummy had been working all day (sahm) while "all daddy has done is get some money".

bran · 07/08/2004 19:58

That sounds like an ambition to be encouraged Daisy

daisy1999 · 07/08/2004 20:01

yes Bran I have always encouraged child labour

Angeliz · 07/08/2004 20:17

I've had tonnes of jobs before dd and when she's old enough to be bothered to ask, i'll have lots of things to tel her.
Now however, this is our time together and i can't see me working for a while yet as have another on the way. (and am lucky enough not to have to).
My mam was a sahm for years till we were all old enough and then she started work as she was bored.

Hulababy · 07/08/2004 21:33

My 2yo DD knows that daddy "works" and mummy "looks after DD and works in a school"; so my DD tells everyone that mummy works the hardest. I haven't thought to change that thought in any way!

miggy · 07/08/2004 21:45

Dh works from home now and I work part time outside the home. DS2 said last week "Well mummy must be the main breadwinner because she goes out to work"! Just shows what funny ideas they have.

whymummy · 07/08/2004 21:56

i am a SAHM too,one day we were stopped in the street by a woman doing a survey, when she asked what was dh's job ds(then 5) shouted "he's an electrician and mummy is a cleaner" i had to explain to him what my role was

harrassedmum · 15/08/2004 22:02

Also knew you were being funny!! My dd will be getting used to me going to work soon, but at the minute she knows daddy goes to work to earn pennies while we go out and spend them all at the shops!

clairabelle · 15/08/2004 22:22

my dd tells people that daddy goes to work in the day to tell people how to make cars and drink beer with his friends and says mummy only goes out at night to work dread to think what people think of us

berries · 16/08/2004 10:21

dd2 called whoever was doing the cooking 'mummy' for years. In our house, mummies do the ironing bu daddies do the washing. Oh, and daddies always cook Sunday lunch because mummies can't make Yorkshire puddings . DD2 also once did a lovely picture of a row of cars under the moon. When asked what it was she said 'it's all the mummies going to the pub!'.
