Giving up work, what to say to employer when giving notice?

Hello

I have given this some consideration for a few months now. I have decided to give up my current job. There are many reasons, the deciding factor being to take over as a carer for a family member (current carer no longer able to cope due to health issues).
Won't go into too much detail as don't want to out myself.

Other reasons are mainly employer related . Commute no longer feasible and rota constantly changes , often at a moments notice. Very hard to plan life around it. Office badly managed.

As an aside had a bereavement which i felt was not handled with any compassion or understanding and resulted in me being signed off work.

Also have ongoing serious family issue which is a cause of anxiety and aggravates stress and ongoing health issues. This puts pressure on me while working.

I would rather not go into great detail with employer if possible and want to avoid mentioning work related issues. I know it will seem a bolt from the blue though so they will want some form of explanation. The manager I would have to meet with is very abrupt and quite pushy in nature.

What also makes it tricky is i had a meeting this week which they arranged at very short notice and was I not prepared then with written notice. However I did plan to bring it up during the conversation and confirm in writing later. Meeting towards the end took unexpected turn. So I did not have the conversation.

I think manager will also ask why I did not mention anything then as in the meeting workload and hours were also discussed. I was waiting till the end the didn't feel it was appropriate under the circumstances. I can't post why as defiantly will out me,sorry.

Does anyone have any words of advice on how to have this conversation?.

I have never given notice before as previous jobs have either come to a natural contractual end (temporary contracts) or ended in redundancy (worked in a lot of retail roles).

I have read it is good form to to give notice in person and ideally have the conversation in person. Also any advice on wording my notice would be great. I have looked up templates online which seem to be more appropriate for leaving for another job.

Thankyou for reading

You don't have to give any reason. If they ask you could say personal circumstances.

Don't give a reason in your resignation letter. If you are asked in person about what you're doing, just say something like "change in circumstances" or "caring for a relative".

If you want to keep door open to return in future (maybe) then do discuss in more detail with your manager if you feel comfortable.

You don't need to explain your decision. You don't need to justify your choices.

Good luck for the future

You don't have to say why... if they ask you can just say personal reasons
