I only found out about this on Friday, & whilst I applaud the updating of the Data Protection legislation, I can only see it being a night are for some traders & very small businesses.

This link came up from PayPal on my FB page earlier with useful checklists.

Have you been living under a rock?

DorynownotFloundering · 08/04/2018 11:42

No Kerberos I haven't, hence my post. I am a sole trader in a very non techy business, & tbis was only flagged up to me on Friday by a friend who has a larger database business.

Less sarcasm & more information would be useful !

I am concerned as by formatting a more formal, process/policy of recording my few clients details will actually make them MORE identifiable.
Currently they are on my phone & diary mixed in with my personal details & never identified with addresses or sensitive information.

Just call the ICO’s dedicated small business helpline.

Clavender · 12/04/2018 08:23

Agree with Thanksfor - the ICO has a useful section of their website too.

DoryNow · 18/04/2018 01:03

Thanks for the helpful responses, been trying the helpline for ages now, but will keep trying as I appreciate they are probably inundated.

I have scoured the website, but nothing there seems relevant to me, I don't process data, or have a date base of clients.

Any contact details I have are destroyed/ deleted as soon as irrelevant.

Think I will draft a policy in case I'm ever challenged about it but am clinging to
" adequate, relevant and limited to what is necessary in relation to the purposes for which they are processed" which I just found on the website.

If you have customers and invoice them, or have suppliers and pay them then you are processing data and GDPR is relevant to your business.

There is an excellent resource for all small business owners. GDPR solicitor Suzanne Dibble has a Facebook group for small business onwers. She has a fab intro video into GDPR and a pack where you get all the legal items you need plus a check list. You do not need to purchase the pack to join the Facebook group. (But the pack is less than the cost of getting a new Privacy Policy for your website for example). There are over 30 free videos covering marketing, franchisors, therapists and more, and she answers questions. All the videos she has done can be watched, and they are categorised so you can choose the ones you think are relevant to you.

I would highly recommend Suzanne's 2 hour video on the basics before you do anything else. It has been invaluable to our small business, and from the comments I see in her Facebook group, she is helping thousands of very small businesses. jz993.isrefer.com/go/gdpr/CGo/

I hope it helps!

Also concerned

okdok · 18/04/2018 11:23

Seems madness that every cleaner etc is supposed to deal with this from scratch.

DoryNow · 18/04/2018 21:33

CGowing1 I am not saying it isn't relevant, just that if the whole process of proving I am compliant ( by their advice) actually identifies my cliemts more than if I don't, where does that leave me.

My invoices do not identify the recipient, other than the type of hours worked & what for ( sorry trying to be neutral!) I have no goods from suppliers.

I am quite happy to be compliant, data protection is so important, but it really bothers me that sole traders with a very small client base are going to be chasing their tails trying to work out how it affects them!
