Training cost clause

I'm currently employed by an nhs trust on a temporary one year contract in order to complete a year of training that leads to a qualification. My contract says that if I am offered a job at the end of the contract I will be expected to accept it or repay some training costs. I have been told I will be offered a permanent job but it hasn't happened yet. I've started applying for the same post with other trusts as I don't want to end up without a job and it looks like these other jobs would suit me better. Can my current trust make me pay them back costs when they haven't offered me a permanent job yet? If I wait until the end of my training to see if I've got a job it is likely that nowhere else will be recruiting by then.

Assuming the wording is as you’ve put it here “My contract says that if I am offered a job at the end of the contract ” then they have until the end of your contract to offer you a job. You can’t decide that actually means if they haven’t offered you a job by 3 months before the end of your contract or whatever timescale you think is reasonable.

Thanks flowery. I know you're right. I'm just frustrated and not knowing where I stand with jobs whilst others in a similar position at other trusts already have jobs secured. I've withdrawn my other applications as I know I wouldn't be able to accept any offers. I'll just have to suck it up.
