Hello,

I am currently working in London and living in Reading. The commuting is become even more exhausting and money consuming therefore I started looking to changing job that allow me to work locally. Eventually, I have been offered a job around my area, I am so happy as its my dream job and my dream company to work for. In my final interview, I have been offered the job straightaway then in a week they sent me a formal offer, then I found out that I am pregnant for 8 weeks. I am happy of course, but I am also scared how to tell this to my new employer, I would like to tell them upfront but I am afraid that they will find an excuse to get rid of me during probationary period ( however, they do not state any probationary period on my contract, does it means i dont have probation period? ). On the other hand, some friends suggest to tell after 12 weeks ( first scanned) and other suggest until I complete my probation period. However I am afraid it perceived as dishonesty in the eyes of my new employer. I really need an advice on this as this my first pregnancy and I never been in this situation before. I really appreciate all the answer and reply. Thank you very much.

Same thing happened to me. I made sure I have contract and job offer in writing and phoned them to let them know before I started (I would’ve been 24 weeks at start date).

You won’t be entitled to maternity pay (maybe Mat allowance - look into it).

My employer weren’t too pleased but not a lot they could do, as you’re protected in employment whilst pregnant (only pregnancy related things obviously).

I would wait until you are 12 weeks until telling them, possibly longer if you can.

It happened to me too, after 2 miscarriages and then trying for 2 years I found out I was pregnant. I was 12 weeks when I went for my job induction. Told the girl from hr. I was so nervous but was delighted inside. I knew people were talking about me behind my back. Company sent me for a work assessment. I had to end up leaving at 29 weeks due to pregnancy issues and having to go to hospital 3 times a week. I had a healthy boy.

I was offered a job and stupidly told them I was pregnant straight away. I was only about 8 weeks. They didn't (couldn't really) retract the offer but went on and on about how it would make things difficult and all the adjustments that they would need to make etc, it was awkward and unpleasant. I ended up turning down the job, which is obviously what they wanted but that turned out to be the best thing for me in the long run.

Don't tell until you have to.

Don't tell until you legally have to. If you tell them now they'll find an excuse to withdraw the job offer.

I just told them on my first day. I was undergoing ivf so wasn’t sure if I’d get pg but of course it worked. They were actually ok the first time. Not the second time tho lol!

I was in a similar situation, I told them after I received the offer they were fine about it.

Thank you very much for sharing your experience.. I really appreciate it. I already got the employment contract and already sent it back to them. I will have my first dating scan on April 11, 5 days before I start my new job.

Furthermore, in my employment contract they dont stated any probation period and seem like its very ethical company to work for ( judging from the values, etc) So I might tell them once it confirmed that I am really are pregnant and hope its fine for them. (Please crossing all your fingers for me)

again, Thank you very much all

Until you have worked for an employer for two years, you can be dismissed for any reason (other than protected reasons) and you don't have the right to bring a claim for unfair dismissal.

Pregnancy is a protected reason and if they dismissed you because you are pregnant then they could face legal action.

However, if they dismiss you for any other reason, there is nothing you can do.

Don't tell them until after you have started.
