Taking breaks off me

So Im over 18 and I work 5 hour shifts. I don't have a break I don't need one and I'm too busy to have one. However work has said they are going to take half an hour work off me for a break regardless of if I have it or not. Is this correct I thought it was 6 hours I had to work?

I was under the same impression as you OP - as soon as you clock up 6 hours it has to have included a 20 minute break. Does it suit your employer to have you take an unpaid break at a time they are not so busy, or something?

If they insist in taking it off you, make sure you take the break. And tell them how much work you won't get done if they force you to take a break. Is there a union you could join?

I'm talking about the UK/EU.

Thanks for replying well. They're not bothered about the actual break they're saying it's a legal requirement to have one so they will deduct money to show I've had one regardless if I have but as I work 5 hours if the requirement is 6 they shouldn't be deducting my wages if ive got it right.

If you are in the UK I think they have got it wrong ... unless - are you working with machinery? If no union available, check with ACAS. hth OP

6 hours and then you must have a break. I’d be questioning that one.

It'll be on a government website - take a print out into work and ask, in all innocence, whether they aren't mistaken.
