'More Experienced Person'

I'm very disappointed to not have got a basic HR role where I work.

The background is, last summer I completed & passed CIPD level 3. I have decades of admin experience & the role advertised is basically admin with Hr in the title. It's at a level I had in my previous role, but a grade higher than the one I'm currently in.

Apparently the reason I didn't get the job is because they've given it to someone with 'HR' experience. I feel that in fact the reason is because the hiring manager is new & needs someone more experienced to make sure everything right.
AFAIK this is the HR managers first role. So basically HR manager lacking in confidence/knowledge.
The HR manager also told me that the decision was made by someone more senior (who didn't interview me)

Yes I could suck it up, but I don't like the unfairness of it. It's also a low paid role so why would someone with 'lots of experience' want it? Confused (yes I know none of my business but something is off about the whole thing).

Btw I fit the person specification.

I'm a bit confused about the issue, what is unfair?

To making a hiring decision based on amount of experience the candidates offer is reasonable/normal isn't it? Especially if the experience complements the manager's own experience.

Yes it is.

There's just something not quite right about it.

It's a perfectly valid reason to hire one candidate over another. Sadly the number of admin roles is shrinking so the competition for them will be fierce. It's possible/likely successful candidates will be overqualified.

Sorry you are disappointed and good luck with your job search.

I work in HR, it's a difficult field to get a first role in and organisations will always want someone with experience over someone who just has a qualification. Whilst the level 3 is a great start, it doesn't give you the experience of offering advice to managers regarding HR issues. HR Admin staff generally get involved in HR issues but at a lower level, meaning that the roles aren't just 'admin'.
Is it worth asking if you can help the team with tasks so that you can gain some actual hand on experience?

”It's also a low paid role so why would someone with 'lots of experience' want it?”

Why does it matter why they wanted it? Could be all sorts of reasons. I know it’s disappointing but I’m not sure I understand why you feel it’s “unfair”?

Another one who doesn't really understand why you feel this is unfair. Even if you did fit the person spec for the role - and that's for them to judge, not you - it doesn't mean you're entitled to the role. If the person they hired meets the person spec and has HR experience on top, surely it's a bit of a no-brainer that they would choose that candidate over and above someone without that experience.

Willowthewhisp · 18/03/2018 15:56

It's a valid reason, and the opposite can also be true, I got my first HR role over more experienced candidates as (my boss later told me) they were fed up with people joining and trying to do what they had always done previously without thinking if it was actually the right thing for the company.
Well done on getting your cipd qualification.

”Apparently the reason I didn't get the job is because they've given it to someone with 'HR' experience. I feel that in fact the reason is because the hiring manager is new & needs someone more experienced to make sure everything right.”

But those two reasons- the one you’ve been given and the one you think is the real one- don’t contradict each other? If the HR Manager needed someone with more experience, and you were the candidate with that experience but they appointed the one without it, then I could see your point!

Oxfordblue · 18/03/2018 17:04

flowery, what I mean it's an entry level job, supporting the HR manager. It's not an 'experienced' HR role. That's

On reflection , the new HR manager doesn't have a clue what they're doing so have appointed an experienced hand to assist them. Which is not the job description etc.

Thanks for all comments, I realise I'm not entitled to it, I just thought & hoped that as a business, it would be good to promote internally (& im more than capable of doing it!)

I'm over it now, I'm going to see if there are any ad hoc temping days which might help with the experience side.
